Welcome
The Spanish Association for Irish Studies (AEDEI) brings together professors, lecturers, students and others who share an interest in all aspects related to the history, society, art and literature of Ireland. It is a non-profit academic organization devoted to the appreciation and promotion of Irish culture in Spain. AEDEI was founded at the University of Burgos in 2001 by Prof. Inés Praga, who was its first president and is now its honorary chairperson. Since its founding, AEDEI has expanded enormously, covering a great number of people working in the area of Irish Studies. The AEDEI annual meetings, which normally take place in May at a Spanish university, provide an opportunity for members to meet and exchange information. Membership can be secured by sending a message to the secretary. Estudios Irlandeses is the AEDEI journal, a dynamic and specialized e-journal published once a year with contributions from scholars all over the world. Estudios Irlandeses aims to address an ample range of issues related to Irish studies and it has already become an international forum for original research in the field.

Dear AEDEI members,

We would like to share with you the CfP for the upcoming IASIL 2027 International Conference “Children of the Nation” | University of Otago, Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka (New Zealand) | 28 June – 2 July 2027.

The conference builds on a new interest in engagements with the child in Irish writing, most notably the special issue on ‘Children and the Youth in Ireland’ in Études Irlandaises, but the conference organisers also encourage speakers to think beyond direct representations of childhood to reflect on the concept of birth, youth, and the nation figuratively. For more information, you can visit the IASIL website: https://www.iasil.org/2026/08/conference-2027-university-of-otago-otakou-whakaihu-waka-28-june-2-july-2027/

Dear AEDEI members,

We are very happy to share that different AEDEI members have contributed to the publication Companion to the Contemporary Irish Novel (Syracuse University Press), edited by Kathleen Costello-Sullivan, Derek Hand, and Neil Murphy.

Since the 1980s, Ireland has gone through a profound social, demographic, and religious disruption, the impact of which has been seen across recent fiction from Irish writers. This volume traces this cultural shift and its impact by examining how modern novels have reckoned with a new conception of Irishness. Bringing together thirty scholars from across the field, Companion to the Contemporary Irish Novel offers a complete contextualized reading to study vital changes in Irish national and cultural identity. Congratulations to both authors and contributors!
