HYMO is organizing a Student Seminar on Saturday, 22 November 2025, at Wilhelmsson Hall. This event offers students an opportunity to present their thesis, dissertation, essays, or study-related projects to their academic muslim peers.

📅 Date: 22nd of November
⏰Time: 15:00 
📍Location: Wilhelmsson Sali, Mannerheimintie 5

Depending on the number of participants, we’ll have around 7–8 presentations of 7–8 minutes each, or fewer presentations with longer times.

Deadline for signing up is 14th of November. We’ll review all submissions and contact selected presenters with more details.

A STATEMENT BY THE
MUSLIM STUDENT ASSOCIATION
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI

Recently in Finland politicians have spoken about the Islamic veils and Islam as cultural threats to the Finnish society. It is important to note that these talking points are part of a broader right-wing and anti-Islam populist ideology, and serve as a distraction from the country’s economic challenges by shifting public attention to cultural “others.” The language of women’s rights is often used as a cover to push anti-Muslim, anti-Islam, xenophobic, and anti-immigration agendas.

For example Finland’s current Minister of Finance Riikka Purra has employed racist rhetoric concerning the Islamic veils and the religion itself as an opportunity to evoke nationalist sentiments of Finnish identity, culture, and tradition.
These claims distort the practices of Muslims to create cultural conflict, fueling fear and division instead of solving the worsening conditions of people in Finland.

From attempts to ban the burqa and niqab to anti-migration politics, Muslims and migrants are often blamed for the short-comings of a deteriorating welfare state. This politics of fear builds a material basis for further alienation of our communities.

We refuse to be used as political pawns and stand strong against all injustice.
