Matilda Karttunen spent the summer working as a research assistant in the NextBIM project at Xamk’s Wood Construction Laboratory in Savonlinna. She has completed two years of architecture studies at the University of Oulu.

Matilda applied for a summer job at Xamk to gain experience in her own field and put her skills into practice.
“I was warmly welcomed here, and the atmosphere in the work community has been very positive. I didn’t have to know everything in advance, as there was always someone ready to help. I also gained new perspectives and ideas for design from other employees.”

Matilda’s work mainly involved modelling with building information modelling software for the project. She was also able to use her visual skills in various design tasks. Work-related trips were especially motivating and brought welcome variety to the summer.

“Learning new things and exploring topics in more depth has been inspiring. The work also showed me how much I have already learned so far,” she says.

According to Matilda, the summer job was a valuable stepping stone into working life in her own field.
“I have been able to observe the construction industry from the perspectives of different professionals while also contributing my own viewpoint and skills. Deepening my understanding of building information modelling and working with current topics have given me a strong foundation for the future.”

Juulia Paananen spent the summer working as a research assistant in the FunWaterCirc project at Xamk’s Fiber Laboratory in Savonlinna. She is a third-year chemical engineering student at Aalto University.

“I have been warmly and kindly welcomed here. I’ve been able to try things independently, while always having support available when needed. I’ve felt that my views are valued.”

Juulia’s tasks have been varied, from collecting samples at a factory and analysing them in the laboratory to writing results and drawing conclusions. She feels that project-based work suits her well. It has offered opportunities to practise collaboration and problem-solving, and to learn how to deal with situations where new solutions are being explored and there are no ready-made answers.

“Following the project almost from the beginning has been interesting. I’ve learned how research progresses, how projects work in practice and what is involved in carrying them out. It has also been inspiring to work on meaningful and timely issues, such as the sustainable use of natural resources.”

In short, Juulia says the summer has given her valuable experience for the future — about her field, working life and herself.

Researchers and lecturers Barnabás Gulyás and András Déri from Eötvös Loránd University International visited Xamk's Juvenia Youth Research and Development Centre last week. 🌏

During the week, the visitors presented us a recently published study focusing on the youth sector, which is the first of its kind in Hungarian history. 💪 They also took part in a forest survival game during Juvenia's development day and networked with Xamk's staff and other local stakeholders. 🌲

Xamk's Juvenia carries out research and development in the youth sector at local, national and international levels. It has a long-standing partnership with Eötvös Loránd University aimed at developing the youth sector. Thank you for visiting us – we hope to see you again soon! 😍
