Hey guys! Just a reminder that nominations for next years committee open on Monday! Feel free to message any one of the current committee for more information of our roles;
CHAIR (CORE) – Current: Ben Priestly (bp415)
The Chair drives the direction of the club for the year and is the main liaison between the club and the SU. Responsible for chairing regular committee meetings, attending (potentially running) club training sessions and discussing and implementing policy for the betterment of all levels of the club. Ability to compartmentalise and balance the work of the club with personal course work and devote a decent amount of time to fencing and its image at the university expected. A good relationship (or willingness to create one) with the SU Sport staff and Pentathlon GB is expected.
TREASURER (CORE) – Current: Ned Dreamer (ew601)
The treasurer is responsible for the flow of money into and out of the club accounts, for purchasing equipment and signing off invoices from coaches. Willingness to invest some time getting to know how the SU finance system works(!) expected in the first few weeks of the year. As a core committee position it is expected that the treasurer would show commitment to the day to day running of the club and the coaching of sessions. Ensuring that the books are managed in a sustainable way and finances are stretched responsibly is an important part of this role. Ned is the best in the world and the best fencer at the club.
WELFARE AND INCLUSIVITY OFFICER (CORE) (+COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER) – Current: Ottilie Kuehne (omk26)
The club wouldn’t run without its members feeling welcome and enjoying being part of the fencing community. The welfare and inclusivity officer has two roles; the welfare aspect offers a friendly face for members to bring concerns or problems to while the inclusivity role should drive the club to ensure it is open and welcoming to all people. The role has a larger emphasis on communication both within and outside the club via Facebook, email, face-to-face, etc. This presence as communication officer should help keep all members up to date with what is going on in the club as well as the wider University and fencing community. As a core position this person should also be willing to contribute to the wider running of the club and coaching of sessions.
MEN'S CAPTAIN – Current: James Russell (jr2049)
Note: It is recommended that you have at least 1 years’ experience fencing for the university in BUCS before running for this role.
Men’s captain has the responsibility of being the main contact for all BUCS related administration (teamsheets and BUCS Play App), and liaison with the SU Sport staff members, for the Men’s 1st team. Additionally, it is expected that the captain will have a strong presence within the club and make the advanced section of the club as conducive as possible to high performance in BUCS, including ensuring good attendance at BUCS matches. This role (as with all captain roles) is the only one where failure to do the necessary jobs results in monetary fines for the club, so diligence and commitment is vital.
WOMEN'S CAPTAIN – Current: Olivia Wray (oew26)
Note: It is recommended that you have at least 1 years’ experience fencing for the university in BUCS before running for this role.
Same as the Men’s captain (but responsible for the Women’s 1st team), with resulting commitment to the club.
SOCIAL SECRETARY – Current: Olivia Wray (oew26)
Responsible for organising and attending multiple regular socials for club members throughout the year. It is expected that liaison with the Welfare and Inclusivity officer will be a further addition to the role to ensure socials are inclusive to all.
NOVICE COORDINATOR – Current: Catriona Gilmour (cg823)
The novice coordinator will has a key role in ensuring the best experience is delivered to those new to the sport. A key aspect of the role will be to organise student coaches to help at beginner sessions while also being expected to attend most beginner sessions, acting as the liaison of the wider club to the novices. A willingness to lead beginner sessions (with the possibility of attending coach training course(s) beforehand) is essential, along with a desire to further beginner development by organising internal and external competitions. This would be an ideal role for any novices this year looking to be further involved in the club and any fencer looking to improve their fencing coaching and leadership skills.
