“…even some of our quieter children are becoming more confident in joining in and expressing themselves.”

That’s what the manager at one of our Duke's Education nurseries noticed after a term of Debutots.

It’s what we see in our parent and child classes too. Children don’t just listen to the story. They step inside it, become the characters and find their voice, with you right beside them.

We are currently running a 45-minute session every Thursday at St Matthias Church Lower Hall near Fiveways. It starts at 9.45am and we'd love to see you there. Booking link in comments.

For more than seven years now, I’ve always found it hard to explain clearly what we do.

Interactive storytelling and dramatic play is ‘accurate’, but it doesn’t really capture nor tell you why it matters. Then this came up at our AGM recently: the story provides the language, the drama gives the children a reason to use it. A child who has to ask the monkeys to help her build a rocket isn’t practising vocabulary. They’re using it, because in that moment they need it. That’s where language is developed and consolidated.

Some of the most important moments in a Debutots session aren’t the big ones. They’re the quiet in-betweens, when a child who’s been holding back suddenly tells you all about their dog, their new shoes or how much their legs have grown.

Our new 1:1 sessions give children more room for those moments. Each one is shaped around your child, whether that’s a story, a snippet of role play, a craft or just a chat.

Scarves flying, imaginations soaring 🎨✨ And with Music With Mike plus other talented entertainers appearing at Rockwater’s Family Fun Festival earlier in the summer too, the kids were in for an overload of fun!

What a day! 🌈

Huge thanks to Rockwater Hove for having Debutots along for their Family Festival. Rainbow Rangers came out to play and the energy from all the little ones was just magic! ✨

Someone said to me the other day:

“Debutots all sounds very nice… but what is it you actually DO?!”

Fair question. So here’s the honest answer 👇

We take a story, break it right down - characters, world, challenges, heart - then hand the pieces to the children and let them rebuild it themselves.

Through drama games, improv and dialogue-building, they create a safe space to collaborate with real confidence. No pressure to get it “right” - just permission to imagine, try and build something together.

The result? Wonderful, wild new versions of stories and performances that the children remember long after the session ends.

This is what that looks like before the magic starts. 🎭✨

This week one of our youngest Debutots stars marched straight up mid-session and asked, all by himself, “Can we do Bananaphone?”

No prompting. No adult suggesting it. Just a child who felt safe enough, confident enough and excited enough to ask for exactly what he wanted.

That’s the whole philosophy of Debutots in one moment - sessions that are child-led, not adult-directed. We give the structure; they bring the joy.
