🦴🔬 University of Brighton researchers are developing a pioneering new sensor that could help detect osteoarthritis before irreversible joint damage occurs -opening the door to earlier diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The 14-month project, led by Professor Katherine Staines alongside Professor Bhavik Patel and Dr Lisa Mullen, aims to identify tiny chemical changes in joint fluid linked to the earliest stages of arthritis 👩‍🔬⚕️

With more than 10 million people in the UK affected by osteoarthritis, this groundbreaking research could one day transform how joint disease is diagnosed and monitored. 💡

Our Brighton Boost programme received Bronze at the What Uni Student Choice Awards (WUSCA), recognising the difference it's making in helping students feel secure, supported and ready to succeed. Because the awards are based entirely on student reviews, the recognition makes this achievement especially meaningful.

The programme provides eligible students with up to £1,000 in funding and practical support to help with first-year study, accommodation and travel costs.

📸 A forgotten Brighton photographer who helped shape the history of photography is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

New research from the University of Brighton, led by Professor Annebella Pollen in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, is uncovering the remarkable story of William Constable - the Victorian photographer believed to have taken the first royal photographic portrait 👑

Nearly 185 years after opening one of Britain’s earliest photographic studios on Brighton seafront, Constable’s legacy is being celebrated with a new blue plaque at 57 Marine Parade.

From royalty and artists to curious Victorian visitors, Constable introduced generations to the magic of photography at a time when capturing an image with light seemed almost unbelievable ✨

Winner of Best Short Documentary at the London Independent Film Festival, the film reveals how everyday life, family and domestic spaces shaped one of the most influential creative voices of the post-war era.

Hear how the team brought rare archive material and personal stories together to create a film that connects research with new audiences beyond academia.

Is it time to rethink how we teach and assess mathematics?

On National Numeracy Day yesterday, Principal Lecturer in Education at the University of Brighton, Alison Barnes, was on BBC Radio 4’s to talk about how make learning mathematics more relatable for young pupils.

Alison, who specialises in primary mathematics education, highlighted the need to relook how we assess mathematics.
