Continuing the Nutshell redesign, I wanted to push the concept a little further and explore how these visuals could live as Kindle stickers. There’s something really fun about turning cover elements into something more playful and adaptable – especially for digital readers who still want a bit of personality on their device.

I took the same close-up details used on the bookmarks, as well as the main cover illustration, and reworked them into standalone graphics. I also played around with a few quirky drink – themed quotes to pair with the imagery, helping to push the visual language into something more versatile. These stickers could easily work as a fun way to decorate your Kindle for the summer season – especially since so many readers like switching up their arrangements based on the time of year or upcoming holidays.

It’s been a nice reminder that book – inspired design doesn’t have to stop at the cover – these small extensions let the visual identity take on a life of its own beyond the page.

There’s something so satisfying about when design elements come together as a cohesive set, so it only felt fitting to extend the Nutshell cover concept into bookmarks as well.

For the bookmarks, I pulled close-up elements from the cover and explored how they could work on a smaller scale. I focused on the smoothie itself – a zoomed-in detail of a hand holding it from the bottom corner – and experimented with quirky, drink – themed quotes to make the designs feel more versatile rather than being specific to readers of the book.

Exploring these extensions is one of my favourite parts of this challenge – a reminder that book design isn’t just about the front cover.

A closer look at my Nutshell cover redesign: the pink-and-green palette comes from a recurring smoothie motif, and the imagery is inspired by a mundane scene that stood out – memorable without giving anything away.

What I love about this challenge is thinking beyond a single flat surface – a book is a physical object with multiple planes. It’s so satisfying when the front and back cover unify well, and I enjoy using the back as a space to be creative rather than leaving it as a wall of text. Small details like this help carry the story and create a complete visual experience.

My love of reading has recently been a huge source of creative inspiration. With the rise of BookTok and bookstagram, I’ve noticed – like many others – how often book covers feel uninspired or misleading. Too many fall into familiar tropes (think skulls and swords for romantasy or a single lit window for thrillers), leaving them disconnected from the story and missing the originality to stand out – they all start to look like they’re from the same series. ✨📚

As cover art becomes an even bigger draw for readers – from fan art to sprayed edges – I’ve set myself a new challenge: to reimagine the covers of books I’ve read, creating concepts that better capture their essence. I’ll also be exploring related designs like accompanying bookmarks and Kindle stickers.

Starting with Nutshell by Ian McEwan – not my favourite read, admittedly – I wanted to refresh it using visuals inspired by the story. A recurring smoothie motif lead me to Joe and the juices pink and green palette, while one vivid image of a pregnant character sunbathing in a bright pink bikini became the seed for this reimagined cover. 👙🌰🥑

A fun way to merge my love of reading and design – my dream would be to illustrate books covers one day!

🥐As a dog lover I love watching the shapes dogs can distort themselves into to get comfy, my particular favourite is when they curl up in a ball (tail tucked in and all) and I always thought they looked a bit like a croissant so enjoy my doodle of a dog merged with a croissant. 🥐

Using smooth shapes and sharp angles I wanted to merge the two forms as smoothly as possible.

This almost feels like it could be a brand mark for something but for what who knows, any dog friendly bakeries out there looking for some branding? 😆

Finishing touches

The finishing touches to the suite included additional signage such as a pointer for card collection, a prompt for guests to sign the board and reading cards for members of the wedding party to write out their speeches as the couple wanted to avoid using screens for this element of their day.

Each piece was designed to complement the suites palette and style, featuring the custom monogram and soft sage background. These extras added layers of connection and charm.

Echoing the table plan, each table name was carefully chosen to reflect each of the couples favourite coffee spots between Glasgow and Bristol with the corresponding icons being reflected from the table plan.

Loved seeing these small details come to life!
