This week our second year students have been learning about flooding and water rescue, as part of their Technical Rescue module.

As well as having knowledge and practical experience of what is going to be an increasing issue for UK emergency services over the coming years, students have also developed transferable skills including-
> Teamwork and followership in high pressure, rapidly deteriorating situations
> Effective communication in confusing, noisy environments
> Leadership styles and instant decision making in life-threatening situations
> Casualty Care in the hot and warm zones

Flood rescue teams are often deployed into a affected region for 4 days at a time, so the contact time for this module was run as a residential experience, incorporating day and night scenarios. Thank you to King Edward VI School Southampton for supporting us with fantastic facilities to run this!

Lots to analyse in this video!
During the technical rescue module we’ll pick apart several videos of real rescues, looking for points to praise and room for improvement.

This sheer destruction saw 14 countries affected including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Burma (Myanmar), Somalia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, South Africa, Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles.

Today our year 1 students will be taking part in a number of live exercises with Devon and Cornwall Police, at Bicton. The police will be exercising some of their specialist units in an emergency scenario. For the rescue and emergency management course students this is more than 'play acting' - they will be looking in depth at some of the planning, preparation and exercising considerations following the drill. We will not be adding any photographs of the exercise or the police as their tactics/actions should not be placed in the public domain.
