From West Suffolk College to the national finals! 🏆

Huge congratulations to 17 year old Beauty Therapy student Lilla Thomas, who has secured her place in the WorldSkills UK National Finals this November! 👏✨

After progressing through the qualifiers and showcasing her skills, Lilla is now one of the top 8 nationally in Beauty Therapy and will represent the East of England at the finals.

“I always knew I had a passion for beauty, but I didn’t realise where it could take me. I’m so excited to compete in November!”

Reflecting on her journey, Lilla said:

“My time at West Suffolk College has been amazing from day one. Beyond building new friendships and mastering new treatments, the real highlight has been the incredible skills I’ve learnt.” 💬

Her advice to others? “Don’t ever doubt yourself. If you have a passion for something, go for it.” 💙

🌐 BT Networking Event – Digital Support & Security T-Level

A big thank you to the BT School Engagement Team at Adastral Park for arranging another fantastic industry event for our West Suffolk College Digital Support and Security T-Level students.

The session gave students a real-world insight into how BT and Openreach’s network infrastructure operates at scale to meet the demands of modern connectivity.

🔌 Hands-on networking – Students had the opportunity to make their own network cables and develop practical networking skills.

💡 The future of fibre – Students explored developments in fibre technology and how networks are evolving to deliver faster and more reliable connectivity.

🌐 Understanding network infrastructure – The team explained how large-scale telecommunications networks operate and the infrastructure required to keep people and organisations connected.

🚀 Technology showcase – The day finished with a showcase tour, giving students the chance to see some of the latest technology developments and innovations.
Opportunities like this are a key part of vocational education. They allow students to take what they learn in the classroom and connect it directly to real technologies, real infrastructure and real careers.

A huge thank you again to Luke, Shane, Kelly and the BT School Engagement Team for investing their time in the next generation of digital professionals.

Students Putting Accountability into Action 📢

Our Public Services students recently took part in a Police Scrutiny Panel, giving them a unique opportunity to see how accountability works in practice.

Students learned about police powers, stop and search, and the rights and responsibilities of the public before reviewing real cases alongside police officers and scrutiny panel members. They challenged decision-making, asked questions of senior police leaders and helped develop recommendations based on the evidence presented.

The event also provided an opportunity to meet the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner and the Area Commander for East Suffolk, helping students gain valuable insight into policing, community safety and civic engagement.

This experience is a fantastic example of learning beyond the classroom, empowering young people to have a voice on issues that affect their communities and developing the confidence to challenge, question and influence positive change.

A huge thank you to Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality for facilitating the event, and to our Public Services team for supporting students to take part.

We're proud to celebrate Jodi Parker, Graphic Design teacher at West Suffolk College, who represented the UK as the Graphic Design Technology Expert at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China.

Selected as the UK's expert in Graphic Design Technology, Jodi helped judge the international competition and worked alongside industry professionals from around the world to uphold WorldSkills' high standards.

From teaching in the classroom to shaping international standards in creative education, Jodi's achievement reflects her dedication, expertise and commitment to helping students develop the skills, confidence and ambition to succeed.
