Happy Birthday Sir David.

FdSc Animal Health and Management students, like many animal science enthusiasts around the world, took a well-earned break from exam revision to celebrate a truly extraordinary milestone: the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough. A renowned natural historian, pioneering filmmaker, passionate conservation advocate, and—quite simply—an icon, Sir David’s influence on our understanding of the natural world is unparalleled.

To mark the occasion, students gathered to reflect on the profound impact of his work, sharing their favourite clips that have inspired generations to appreciate and protect the planet. From breath taking encounters with wildlife to the gentle, unmistakable narration that has become synonymous with natural history storytelling, these moments reminded us all why his legacy endures.

In what felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we were incredibly fortunate to be joined if only in cardboard by the man himself, as we revisited scenes of him at his very best: engaging with animals, bringing ecosystems to life, and communicating complex environmental issues with clarity and passion. His work has not only shaped our academic journeys but continues to guide our aspirations as future professionals in animal health and management.

Celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s centenary was more than just a tribute; it was a reminder of the responsibility we carry forward—to continue learning, advocating, and caring for the natural world with the same dedication and curiosity that he has embodied throughout his remarkable life.

Happy Birthday David - have a fabulous day 😊

Really useful day spent attaining CPD, students and staff had a full day update of welfare considerations in farm animal settings organised by the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund. A wealth of renowned industry specialists held a variety of seminars on multiple animal species including poultry, donkeys and mules, cattle, sheep, goats and alpacas, horses and ponies, rabbits, guineas pigs and reptiles. Speakers from British Hen Trust, The Donkey Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare, Specialist Vets disseminated interesting and insightful information ensuring the students are now all current in legislation, biosecurity and overall management of these species. Really good opportunity for students to receive industry CPD and certification for the day.

Excellent week engaging with industry. Monday we visited the Veterinary Investigation Laboratory at Exeter, where the students were given a talk on the work carried out and prevalent disease, a tour of the analysis labs and observed a post mortem of a calf and goose brought into investigate cause of death. Incredibly interesting and gained an insight into the valuable work carried out. Thursday we were visited by two reindeer owned by one of our 2nd year students Danni who gave an informative talk on their cultural history, husbandry and there use in modern society whilst encouraging students to discuss ethical use and welfare of the species as part of their Contemporary Issues module. Great opportunity to handle and learn more about this species.
