Clare's River Room Café has won a Royal Institute of British Architects Regional (East) Award 2026! 🏆

This award recognises notable architectural projects across the East of England.

The River Room Café was created as part of the wider programme of works, included re-roofing much of Old Court, improving step-free access to key spaces, and upgrading heating and electrical systems.

Designed by Witherford Watson Mann, the project aimed to complement the College’s historic surroundings while introducing a contemporary new space. Working closely with several contractors, the team transformed previously underused areas of the College into a vibrant and accessible hub — one that’s quickly become a favourite among the College community.

This marks the River Room’s second major accolade, following its success at the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards in 2024.

Staff Spotlight 💡

Next up in our staff spotlight series: meet Abby, a key member of Clare’s Conferencing team.

Clare’s Conferencing team manages and hosts the College’s non‑academic events — everything from corporate conferences to weddings, private dinners, and much more.

Abby joined Clare in 2023 with a background in hotel conferencing and events, and she now plays a vital behind‑the‑scenes role supporting our conferencing and business development activity. From arranging a site visit for a snake to helping safely install a full Formula One car on site, Abby has supported an impressive range of logistics at Clare!

With Old Court now restored to its former glory, and the busy summer season ahead where the team welcomes more than 10,000 guests to the College, Abby is excited for the year to come. She reflects on her work in conferencing as a way of future‑proofing the College, keeping its spaces active and relevant for years ahead

Professor Jocelyn Wyburd is the Head of the School of Arts & Humanities, one of the six academic divisions of the University of Cambridge. At Clare, she is a Fellow and Dean of Students, and was a long-serving undergraduate Tutor before stepping back from the role in 2024 to take up her senior position in the University.

In an interview with Clare Review, Professor Wyburd reflects on her over a decade of experience at Clare, and shares insights into the challenges facing Arts & Humanities today, particularly modern languages, whilst highlighting the value of language learning in an increasingly global job market.

70 for 700 – May Features

The fifth instalment of our online exhibition ‘70 for 700’, celebrating Clare figures across seven centuries, is now live.

Among them is Margaret Dunlop Gibson, whose home was once Castle Brae. Together with her sister, Agnes Lewis Smith, she discovered a previously unknown manuscript of the Gospels near Mount Sinai. The collection also highlights former Master Bob Hepple, the South African-born lawyer who defended Nelson Mandela, and dramatist Robert Greene, whose plays helped shape Elizabethan theatre and influenced figures including Shakespeare.

🔗You can discover our May collection via the link here: https://stories.clare.cam.ac.uk/70-for-700/index.html. New stories will be added each month as the exhibition unfolds.
