One of our Geography and Natural Hazards students, Ryan .bailey, has spent the summer in Tenerife as part of his placement year. The internship enabled him to explore a number of sites across the island, gain fieldwork experience and collect data on previous volcanic events. He was even lucky enough to experience the eruption of La Palma and travel to island to see this natural hazard in action (who else is jealous?!).

The internship is an invaluable experience for any student hoping to study volcanoes. Providing an opportunity to gain research and fieldwork experience, and we’ve had a number of students complete the internship during their degree.

And, as Ryan mentioned, for students hoping to complete a placement as part of their degree, we have a dedicated team of advisors that can help you prepare and search for opportunities.

We’ve been busy preparing for our open day this Saturday, including a practical in the wave flume. We use this as part of our BSc Geography and BSc Geography and Natural Hazards courses to assess wave processes, investigate the effectiveness of coastal management techniques and evaluate vulnerability of coastal communities.

Details on signing up to an open day are available on the Coventry University website.

We would like to welcome our new lecturer in Physical Geography and Environmental Management, Dr Avidesh Seenath, to the Geography Team at Coventry University.

Avidesh’s research interests focus on coastal systems evolution and vulnerability under climate change. He holds a PhD in Physical Geography from Durham University, specialising in coastal geomorphology, processes, and numerical modelling. Additionally, he has a BSc in Geography and Environmental Biology with First Class Honours, and an MPhil in Geography from the University of the West Indies. Prior to joining Coventry University, Avidesh consolidated 6 years of teaching experience across the Physical Geography spectrum at Durham University (2016 – 2019) and the University of the West Indies (2012 – 2015). His ongoing research focuses on developing novel approaches for modelling mesoscale (10 – 100 years and 10 – 100 km) shoreline evolution in complex morphologies.
