Just in time for World Otter Day, we are thrilled to share that otters have been discovered on campus! 🦦

Using wildlife cameras, the team monitors animal species on campus and they captured a couple of otters marking their territory at Tocil Lake!

“It's a really big achievement for the University. Otters are top-level predators and when they are present, when they stick around, it means the environment is healthy. This means our campus can support enough prey species for such a predator to live permanently at a site. And they have a habitat where they can hunt and rest and reproduce. And that's what we are trying to create on campus.” - Dalma Zsalako, Sustainability Assistant

Excellent job to our Energy and Sustainability at Warwick , Grounds and Gardens and the Waste and Recycling Teams for keeping our campus safe and pleasant for all - including our furry friends!

We were delighted to host our first Environmental Sustainability Conference on campus last week – an opportunity to connect, share best practice and discuss new ideas.

Over 120 attendees heard about our renewed commitment to achieving net zero for direct emissions by 2030, and the progress we’re making towards becoming a truly sustainable institution.

We heard from our expert alumni panel and subjects throughout the day included the circular economy, education for sustainable development and making space for nature.

A big congratulations to Modupe Jimoh and Helen Wheatley, who were invited to a special Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this month. The party, hosted by King Charles III, celebrated those working in Education and Skills.

'The day made me think a lot about all the students I’ve had the privilege to teach over the years and all the people I’ve worked with since I joined WIE. Teaching and engaging with the public are both a real joy in themselves. Being recognised for doing things I love feels like the icing on the cake, really." - Helen Wheatley, Academic Director Warwick Institute of Engagement

"The garden party was a beautiful occasion with people from all over the country attending. It was a pleasure to meet other attendees who were representing the university community. The tea service was lovely, and it was nice to see the royals taking the time to chat with people. Attendees were free to stroll around the grounds of the garden while enjoying music performed by the Royal band. Overall, it was a lovely and memorable event." - Modupe Jimoh, Associate Professor (Teaching Focused), Civil and Humanitarian Engineering

Both have made outstanding contributions to the education space and we're thrilled to have them as part of our Warwick family 💜

We're thrilled to share that we're joining forces with the Royal Institution of Great Britain to expand public engagement in science, establishing us as a regional hub across the Midlands.

Under this agreement, we will collaborate on:
🔬The development and delivery of collaborative activities for the purposes of public engagement and outreach

🥼 Delivering training activities for members of both parties

🧪 Joint research projects to facilitate and enhance these activities

Warwick has a longstanding and proud relationship with the Royal Institution, from the 1978 Christmas Lectures delivered by Warwick founding Professor Christopher Zeeman, to the collaborative work taking place today. The new partnership, supported by the Warwick Institute of Engagement, has already seen Ri training events hosted on campus and future speaker events planned at Warwick - continuing a shared commitment to inspiring curiosity, discovery and public engagement.

"We know that the UK public wants to see and hear more about science, and we know that scientific research is better when the public is involved. So, we are delighted to be combining our heritage of scientific discovery, demonstrations and pioneering public engagement, with the leading-edge research being undertaken at Warwick." - Katherine Mathieson, Director of the Royal Institution

"This partnership with the Royal Institution, an institution with over two centuries of bringing science to the public, marks an exciting next chapter. Together, we can reach communities across the Midlands and beyond, inspiring the next generation of scientists." - Professor Caroline Meyer, Provost, University of Warwick

We're proud to share we are one of the first universities in England to be awarded the EmilyTest Gender‑Based Violence Charter, marking recognition of its independently assessed approach to preventing and responding to gender‑based violence.

The award follows Warwick’s participation in a pilot programme with the charity EmilyTest, which is expanding its world‑first Gender-Based Violence Charter into English institutions. Those that achieve Charter status must demonstrate that their policies, practices, and procedures meet standards designed to prevent harm, improve responses to disclosures, and ensure effective support for students and staff.

To achieve Charter status, Warwick evidenced alignment with the Charter’s five core principles: being open and learning; educated and empowered; comprehensive and connected; equal and inclusive; and safe and effective. These principles were co‑created with students, education staff, and gender‑based violence specialists.

How many of us could name the iconic sculpture that characterises Rootes' 'Red Square'? 🤔

Since 1968 Warwick's most well-known accommodation has existed side-by-side this abstract work that utilises industrial materials and production methods to brighten the space between residences.

These industrial influences are reflected in its official title - '3B Series 1'.

It was created alongside similar works by German-born artist Bernard Schottlander to revitalise public spaces after the Second World War, which motivated the sculpture's striking red colour.

Although appearing to be made up of 'random' symbols and shapes, the piece is said to read as 'Toil' from a certain angle - potentially connecting '3B Series 1' to the notion of hard, continuous work.

In recent years the sculpture has even become an official listed building, so current generations of students can't enjoy climbing around Red Square as we can see their predecessors did in the 70s!
