What happens when a climate emergency becomes an information emergency too?

Wildfires, extreme weather and other climate-related events can create the perfect conditions for disinformation to spread, fuelling uncertainty and undermining trust when reliable information matters most.

In our latest guest blog, Neill Bo Finlayson explores why information resilience needs to be part of Scotland’s approach to climate resilience.

As the UK grapples with another summer of record-breaking temperatures and devastating wildfires, we are beginning to understand what climate resilience means for our homes, infrastructure and emergency services. Now we need to recognise that it applies to our information environment too.

Scotland's hottest day of the year has seen gritters spreading sand to protect road surfaces from extreme heat, a clear reminder that resilience isn't just about responding to severe weather, but adapting to the changing conditions we increasingly face.

As this BBC News article highlights, high temperatures can affect everything from transport infrastructure and public health to water safety, ecosystems and emergency planning. As our climate changes, these impacts are becoming more frequent and interconnected.

To build true resilience, we need to understand these evolving risks and ensure our infrastructure, services and communities are prepared for both today's challenges and those of the future.

At the National Centre for Resilience, we work with researchers, policymakers, practitioners and communities to help translate evidence into action that strengthens resilience across Scotland.

What would your community do in a flood emergency?

We’re excited to be hosting the official launch of ALL HANDS: A Game About Community Resilience — a free cooperative game designed to help communities explore flooding, communication, and local resilience together, from the team at Socialudo.

The game has been developed with communities and resilience partners to create a fun, engaging way to start important conversations about preparedness, volunteering, and supporting one another during challenging events.
