Dani has shown true dedication to student experience and representation over the last three years that I have known them demonstrating resilience, leadership and commitment to ensuring all students feel included and valued within the various committees and groups they have been involved in. Being School President is not an easy job, it takes a strong mindset that cannot be taught, you need someone who is both passionate and driven- which Dani is! I can honestly say that I cannot think of a better person to be the next School President Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law. Vote Dani for Your School President!

✨ POLICY #3: EXPAND AND IMPROVE STUDENT REPRESENTATION ✨

It's so important that we get a say in our uni experience. I want to scream our student voice from the rooftops, even louder than the ISE zumba lady.

*

Back to that point from yesterday about our student voices not being heard... I want to start fixing that. At the Celebrating Engagement event, Blair Grubb gave a speech. He told us how important our student voices are, and how we need to make them heard - through our SSLC, through our representatives, through our President.

I want to make our student voice so loud it can't be ignored.

I aim to make the Humanities Forum a regular event, and make sure all Divisions have a similar event set up, where anyone can attend and give their feedback. I also hope to facilitate anonymous feedback throughout the year.

And this anonymous feedback isn't just going to be about your courses - it's about the whole school, and your representatives, including me, as we should be held accountable for representing the student voice.

And I'm going to try my damnedest to get Education in the name of the school by the end of the year.

✨ MY EXPERIENCE: CLASS REP ✨

I've been a Class Rep for the last 2 years, and it's been great to get involved student representation in the School and Division at this level! That being said, I'm ready to step up and become the leader of our student representation and make sure we shout out student voice loud enough for every syllable to be heard! Remember to at vote.dundee.ac.uk and USE YOUR VOTE before 30th March 12pm!

I’ve been a Class Rep for the last 2 years; English/Film/Creative Writing in second year, and Philosophy in third year. Both years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with students and staff and build great working relationships with the rest of the SSLC.

I’ve had to deal with some, at times, difficult issues in this role. In second year, there were disputes around marks on a large scale, which I met with the module lead to resolve. This year, I’ve passed continuous feedback to module leads, which has seen real changes be made to teaching for the students’ benefit.

This role has required a lot of organisation, too. I’ve sent out surveys to all running modules of a subject, and also spoken in person with students and module leads to help resolve any issues they might be facing. These are both things I would like to implement on a larger scale, should I be elected.

I have also received a certificate for my commitment to student representation during my time as a Class Rep, to celebrate both my dedication and my effectiveness. I hope this also demonstrates the dedication and effectiveness that I can bring to this role.

Dani is someone who connects people, and I personally think this is what our school needs most at the moment. As President of the Humanities Society, editor-in-chief of the Magdalen, and current student ambassador, they know their way around this university and I am confident will do their best to represent us.

✨ POLICY #2: STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DIVISIONS ✨

Alexa, play Why Can't We Be Friends. Just kidding, I don't have an Alexa, they freak me out. My second aim is all about uniting us as a School, because through unity, we can work towards our common goals. And also have more friends and have some banging socials.

*

One of the criticisms of the new combined school was (and is) that the Divisions are all completely unrelated. While I agree there is a LOT of difference between the studies in each Division, we do have some crucial commonalities.

1. That our student voice felt largely ignored in the process of combining the existing schools - this is something we'll come back to later.
2. We all study people.

Because of this big crossover in our subjects, we were told that multi-disciplinary modules were going to be created to expand not just our education but our module choices. We don't have them... yet.

I want to get the wheels turning on the development of these modules, not just by working with staff, but also students. What kind of modules do we want? I want to find out!

Aside from academics, I want to establish a community with School-wide social events for students and staff. I hope for these to range from coffee mornings, to quizzes, to pub crawls!

Meeting people at University can be a scary time, no matter what year you're in. That's why I want to make it easier to connect with people and for us to be known not just as the biggest school, but the friendliest!

✨ MY EXPERIENCE: THE MAGDALEN MAGAZINE✨

If you know me from anywhere, especially those of you in the Divisions that aren't Humanities, you probably know me from our student magazine, The Magdalen! Here's some information about my experience over these past two years and why it makes me a great candidate for School President. Remember to at vote.dundee.ac.uk and USE YOUR VOTE before 30th March 12pm!

I was involved in the Mag over the past 2 years in 2 different roles – Section Editor of Creative Writing in 21/22, and Editor-in-Chief in 22/23.

As the Section Editor of Creative Writing, I was responsible for sourcing and editing all of the work that was published in the Creative Writing section. I was in charge of 14 people in total, and worked closely with the senior team too! After my year in this role, I was nominated for and ultimately won the Editor of the Year Award, which was a massive honour! This award gave me a lot of confidence in my leadership skills, and led to me becoming Editor-in-Chief this year.

This past year has been a huge learning experience for me. Taking on leadership of around 100 people was something I’d never experienced before, but it’s a role that I feel has allowed me to thrive. Plus, I got some awesome magazines out of it! I’ve been responsible for the full production of the Mag. That’s the writing, designing, editing, printing, liaising with DUSA for many many many things, organising socials, and most importantly organising people! If anything has made me suitable for the role of School President, it’s the role of Editor-in-Chief.

They say "if you want something done, ask a busy person." This is where Dani comes in! Over the past few years Dani proved not only to be able to run multiple teams and organisations, no matter how big or small, but to do it efficiently and inclusively. I am sure she will deliver the same great quality for our School.

✨ POLICY #1: DIVERSIFY THE CURRICULUM ✨

Equality, diversity, and inclusion are massively important to me, and that means in our reading lists too! This is the first aim of the Danifesto - to diversify our curriculum and broaden our horizons as learners.

*

In saying that I want to diversify the curriculum, I want to make sure I acknowledge that this is a project already underway. Academic staff are working incredibly hard to ensure their teaching is inclusive and diverse, and full credit should be given for this where it happens, of course!

However, as a q***r person, I feel that it’s incredibly important to make this a priority if I am to be elected. I want to work with both academic staff and students to make this happen, or at least do my part to continue the progress.

I want to consult with students, particularly those in minority groups such as people of colour, q***r people, women and non-binary people, disabled people, and any other minorities who feel under-represented in our curriculum, across all Divisions.

I also want to consult with staff to see where we can expand teaching, reading lists and resources to become as varied as possible, not just for the benefit of minority students but for all of us, as learners.

I hope that, like the Gender, Sexuality, Culture module that exists in the Humanities Division, we can use student feedback to develop new avenues of valuable teaching for the years to come.

✨ MY EXPERIENCE: STUDENT AMBASSADOR ✨

Being a student ambassador has given me lots of opportunities to work with so many parts of the University, from academic staff to several departments in External Relations. This has given me a great insight into parts of the University that most students don't get to see.

Remember TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO HAVE YOUR SAY! at vote.dundee.ac.uk and USE YOUR VOTE before noon!

I’ve been a student ambassador since my first year here, and ever since then I’ve worked my way up to being a Senior Ambassador, promoted last year! In this job, other than the typical campus tours and Open Days, I am also put in a supervisory role, as well as a representative of the University. I’m responsible for training other ambassadors and supervising during events like Open Days and Offer Holder days. Due to the quality of my work, I’ve also been selected for other roles, such as participating in webinars, assisting the Enquiry Team, and working at Access Summer School.

Acting as a representative of the University doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m not critical of the University, though. That’s the reason why I’m standing for this role – I think good changes can be made and I think I’ve developed the skills to put some of these changes in motion if I’m elected.
