Announcing our first discussion group of the year! 🍓⭐️ Discussion groups are always FREE and unticketed! We can’t wait to see you all there ❣️

In 1869, seven women became the first female undergraduate students at any British university right here in Edinburgh, but when they tried to take their anatomy exam, a mob of male students rioted to block them from entering the building. Despite passing their classes, the university legally barred them from graduating, and it took 150 years for Edinburgh to finally award them their posthumous degrees.

We chose this as our first topic of the year because it’s the history of the campus we walk every day, setting the tone for what our society is here to challenge. It’s also an introductory launchpad to talk about how institutional misogyny, academic gatekeeping, and the medical gender gap still impact us today.

Hello everyone! Our names are Leila and Seraphima, and we represent Edinburgh’s Amnesty International and Feminist Society. We’ve come together to create a new socially-engaged, literary zine that explores the ways politicians weaponise emotion. From our worst fears to visions of our most hopeful futures, political rhetoric increasingly aims to play with our emotions - to fear, to rage, to hope, to hate, or even to falsely align ourselves with people we are told are like us.

But why are we so susceptible to these emotional narratives? Has politics always been this emotional? How can we reclaim an authentic emotional response to the news we consume every day, rather than defaulting to a manufactured one? And when does heightened emotion become a tool for political change, rather than a hindrance to it?

For the first issue, the prompt is Anger. What does your anger do? We want to hear from you. Write about anger as a political weapon, a transformative force, a destructive impulse, a necessary response to injustice - or just completely misplaced energy. You are invited to create anything you like that helps you explore the question above - an essay, a poem, a sketch, a painting, a piece of fiction, a personal reflection, a rant, manifesto, collage! 🍉

Your blessed fruit will be published in the zine and sold at our opening event (and hopefully stocked in a few local bookshops)! All proceeds from zine sales will go to The Sameer Project, a Palestinian led mutual-aid group. Their donations remain at 20% of their expenses. All funds will go to helping the project get back to 25%, where they can resume all vital activities, including medical aid, building shelters and delivering an average of 1000 nutritious meals daily.
