The School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex uniquely combines the four departments of Anthropology, Geography, International Development and International Relations to address the most pressing global issues of our times. The School of Global Studies was founded in 2009, bringing together the departments of Anthropology, Geography and International Relations, and a cross-disciplinary

programme in International Development. Global Studies grew out of earlier interdisciplinary formations at the University of Sussex, a strong influence being the legendary School of African and Asian Studies - AFRAS. Embodying the values of critical, creative and innovative research that have animated Sussex since it was founded in 1961, Global Studies is concerned with the study of some of the most pressing global issues of our times. Combining cutting-edge research on issues such as climate change, the politics of pandemic disease, new democratic spaces, human rights, sexual dissidence, conflict, and security, with a vibrant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme, the School is concerned not only with understanding global transformations, but also with actively contributing to the struggle for global justice and equality for all.

What do we *actually* mean when we talk about national security?

🎙University of Sussex Professor of International Relations Anna Stavrianakis recently joined Zack Polanski on the Bold Politics podcast to discuss military spending, defence, security and the UK’s military-industrial complex, including the role of companies such as Palantir.

💷The UK already has the sixth-largest military budget in the world and military spending is at its highest level since 1980, the height of the Cold War, says Anna.

🧐The conversation challenges the assumption that more military spending automatically means greater security and asks us to think more carefully about what security actually means and what are we spending money on, to what end and what risks are we responding to.

Anna researches and teaches on the arms trade, militarism and global insecurities.

🧐📢🎙Our students don’t lie!

💬The National Student Survey (NSS) captures students’ views on the quality of their courses, helping prospective students make informed choices and providing valuable insights to universities as they work to boost student experience.

🙌 In the latest survey, Global Studies has improved across almost all measures, with particularly strong scores for ‘Teaching on My Course’, ‘Academic Support’, ‘Learning Resources’ and overall positivity! We’ve also seen further improvements in ‘Assessment and Feedback’.

🧐Don’t just take our word for it - take a look at what our International Development (ID), International Relations (IR), Anthropology and Geography students said about their experience.

🌱☀️In this activity from this year’s Climate Justice Summer School, students imagined what the ‘just landscapes’ of the future could look like, as part of Anthropology Doctoral Tutor Laura Shewan's class.

🧱✏Working together in groups, they developed their own ideas for building fairer, happier and more sustainable futures, putting big questions about climate, justice and society into practice.

Inspired to explore climate justice further? Our BA in Climate Justice brings together climate change, social justice, and to help you understand and shape the futures we want to see.

📚 is now open & you can find out more about studying Climate Justice at Sussex via the link in our bio.

🧱💥"As an undergraduate student planning to pursue postgraduate studies, this was one of the most valuable and inspiring experiences in my academic journey."

✔🙏Kana Shimahara, student on our International Relations and Development BA course, worked at The British International Studies Association (BISA) Annual Conference in Brighton last month!

💬"I learned how a large academic conference is organised and smoothly run, and how new discussions and ideas are developed. I was honoured to be allowed to attend several panels I was interested in."

💬"Watching discussions among academics and experts, especially the questions participants raised and how PhD research can become more elaborated through those exchanges, deepened my motivation for future postgraduate studies."

💚🌍The classroom looked a little different last week for our Climate Justice Summer School students, who took their seminar outdoors in the beautiful surroundings of Stanmer Park, exploring climate justice through discussion, games and fresh perspectives!

✨🌳Students took part in an interactive activity led by Dr Will Lock, imagining what a sustainable future could look like and brainstorming the steps needed to get there.
