The School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex uniquely combines the four departments of Anthropology, Geography, International Development and International Relations to address the most pressing global issues of our times. The School of Global Studies was founded in 2009, bringing together the departments of Anthropology, Geography and International Relations, and a cross-disciplinary

programme in International Development. Global Studies grew out of earlier interdisciplinary formations at the University of Sussex, a strong influence being the legendary School of African and Asian Studies - AFRAS. Embodying the values of critical, creative and innovative research that have animated Sussex since it was founded in 1961, Global Studies is concerned with the study of some of the most pressing global issues of our times. Combining cutting-edge research on issues such as climate change, the politics of pandemic disease, new democratic spaces, human rights, sexual dissidence, conflict, and security, with a vibrant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme, the School is concerned not only with understanding global transformations, but also with actively contributing to the struggle for global justice and equality for all.
