Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies at Leeds Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at Leeds

Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies are taught in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. Spanish has been taught as a degree subject at Leeds since 1918 and Portuguese since the 1940s, making us one of the longest-standing providers in the UK. We combine this long-established tradition of scholarship with a dynamic approach to Hispanic and Lusophone Studies and support a wide

range of teaching and research interests in Spain, Portugal, Latin America and Spanish and Portuguese-speaking Africa. Our research culture is multidisciplinary and actively combines the interests and expertise of a team of academics specialised in language, literature, history, social sciences, cultural and film studies. We are proud of our strong connection with the (on-campus) cultural branches of the governments of Spain and Portugal: the Cervantes Institute, the Ramon Llull Institute and the Camões Institute. In partnership with the Department, these institutes host a large number of cultural events and academic activities. We're proud to announce that The Times Good University Guide 2013 has recognised the excellence of our teaching at University of Leeds through a top 10 placing for BA Spanish and BA Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies.

Forgotten Stories of Latin American Sport
A group of students recently took part in an extracurricular research project exploring forgotten
stories of Latin American sport. The project introduced them to digitised newspapers, digital
research tools, and new ways of analysing and presenting historical sources.
Two students, Toby Reid (2nd year) and Fraser Sackfield (1st year), have now completed the
project and recorded a podcast sharing the stories they uncovered and their research journey.
The podcast has been published on Leeds Student Radio and is available to listen to online.
To celebrate the project, a short event will take place on Thursday 7 May, 5–6pm
Michael Sadler LG16
The event will showcase the research process, the stories found, and what the students gained
from the experience. Everyone is welcome to attend
