What do students really learn from a Year Abroad? While language development is often the most visible outcome, an international placement is also a transformative experience that involves personal growth, cultural adaptation, academic development and the acquisition of valuable transferable skills.
To explore these experiences in greater depth, a group of Spanish students took part in a series of focus groups (led by Juan Muñoz López and Isabel Molina-Vidal as part of a scholarship project) where they reflected on the opportunities and challenges they encountered during their Year Abroad in Spanish-speaking countries. Through open and honest discussions, they examined themes such as cultural integration, language learning, academic adjustment, identity, independence and professional development.
Building on these conversations, the students collaborated to create a Spanish-language podcast aimed at future Year Abroad students. The podcast shares first-hand experiences, practical advice and personal reflections, offering an authentic student perspective on what it is really like to live, study and work abroad.
The project demonstrates the value of reflective practice as a tool for learning. By revisiting and discussing their experiences together, the students were able to identify key moments of growth, recognise the skills they had developed and articulate the impact of their time abroad. In turn, the podcast provides a meaningful peer-to-peer resource that can help future students prepare for their own international journeys.
Beyond serving as a guide for prospective participants, the podcast highlights how narrative reflection can foster confidence, intercultural communication and deeper engagement with learning. It also showcases the richness of student voices and the importance of creating opportunities for learners to share their experiences with one another.
The podcast was created by Emily Champagne, Jacinta Hitz, Madeleine McLeod and Zosia Senska, whose thoughtful contributions offer valuable insights into the Year Abroad experience and the lasting impact it can have on students’ personal, academic and professional development.
