I created these illustrations to bring to life the extraordinary Cultural Quarter at the heart of town of Boston in Lincolnshire. They are inspired by wood cut images. The designs tie together the many exceptional historic buildings in the heart of the CQ with the river which runs through the town, the many stories, and fortunes of Boston.
My family moved to Boston when I was 9 and I was educated at the girls high school through the 80’s. After training and forging a successful career in the South East, I came back to live here with my family pre-pandemic. I’ve been fascinated by the the history of this place, and the stories, many of which are of international significance, are not even known by the people who live here.
I developed the images with the team at Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre who are a member of the Cultural Quarter Group. Blackfriars is town’s only theatre and arts centre in the heart of the Cultural Quarter.
Did you know Blackfriars boasts a little known claim to fame as is the oldest building to house a theatre in the UK? It is also an Arts Council NPO.
Did you know that in 1288 King Edward I (Edward Longshanks) donated money and 8 trees from Sherwood forest to restore the Friary building that is home to Blackfriars after fire damage? He even came to stay and see the restoration. Not many theatres have had a King of England to stay.
Did you know that the back wall of the stage is actually the wall of the Guildhall. On the other side of that wall are the cells in which some of the Pilgrim Fathers were imprisoned in 1607, awaiting trial. Literally on the other side of the wall! Just a few extraordinary things you might not know about Boston’s Cultural Quarter
