WATCH NOW: LSTM alumnus Dr Kevin De C**k returned to campus this week to share his insider perspective on decades of public health evolution.

Dr De C**k achieved a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at a time when infectious diseases were widely thought to be a problem of the past.

But he went on to become a pivotal figure in the response to the AIDS pandemic, outbreaks of ebola and yellow fever, and COVID-19.

In this seminar, he discusses his book 'Deployed: A Physician on the Front Lines of Global Health' which provides an insight to the science, the politics and the cultural realities of outbreak response, and what health inequities mean for how we work today.

Drawing on experience from African hospitals tackling endemic disease to high-stakes international responses, he offers practical guidance for the next generation of global health leaders.

🌍 A new £4.5m LSTM partnership has been launched to tackle neglected tropical diseases which affect an estimated 78 million people worldwide.

Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis can cause lifelong disability, impact quality of life and limit economic opportunities in affected communities.

ENDPOINT, which combines the expertise of researchers and scientists in Liverpool, Nepal, Cameroon and Germany, will develop and evaluate innovative new diagnostic and treatment tools, working closely with communities and health systems to ensure solutions are effective, practical and acceptable for those who need them most.

Funded by UK aid through the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), ENDPOINT brings together experts from LSTM's Centre for Drugs and Diagnostics, Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases and the Infection Innovation Consortium, alongside partners in Nepal, Cameroon and Germany.

This investment marks an important step towards a future free from these devastating diseases.

A little bit of LSTM history brought to life.

This week, our new DTMH and MSc Tropical and Infectious Diseases students joined Dr Gerry Davies for a walking tour exploring Liverpool’s remarkable history of health and human rights.

Along the way, the group recreated a historic photograph of a DTMH cohort taken in the same location, connecting today’s students with more than a century of tropical medicine teaching at LSTM.

A lovely way to welcome our newest students to Liverpool and to LSTM.

Another exciting milestone for the Infection Innovation Consortium this week as we launch the programme's second phase to progress pioneering research and development R&D.

The LSTM-led programme, boosted by £6 million from UK Research and Innovation, will set up a permanent, globally-facing R&D hub in the Liverpool City Region.

The hub will support companies to create products and treatments to fight infectious diseases faster and more safely, ensuring patients receive better care and better health.

Nearly 140,000 people die from snake bites every year.

This International Snakebite Awareness Day we're celebrating the groundbreaking work taking place at LSTM to drastically reduce that number.

Home to one of the largest collections of venomous snakes in Europe, we are proud to be at the forefront of tackling this Neglected Tropical Disease through our Centre for Snakebite Research and Interventions.

Professor Nicholas Casewell and fellow researchers are close to developing a pill which can be taken minutes after a bite, even before reaching hospital, to stop internal bleeding and tissue damage.

Research shapes what you learn. On the MRes Tropical Health and Infectious Disease Research, it also becomes what you do.

Spend your first semester building your research knowledge and methods, then dedicate your second and third semesters to a 120-credit research project alongside an active research group. Projects can be lab-based, data-based, literature-based or fieldwork-based, at LSTM, elsewhere in the UK or abroad.

If you’re considering a PhD or a career in tropical health and infectious disease research, the MRes is designed to give you the experience of developing and delivering research for yourself.

Do what you enjoy, be curious and open to change, take risks and remember that science careers are rarely linear.

These were the key take-aways for students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC who visited LSTM for a tour of our facilities and projects.

The group explored real medical case studies used in postgraduate teaching, experienced the immersive suite which simulates real-world clinical or humanitarian environments, and viewed preserved mosquitoes and sandflies in the archive.

Students went behind the scenes in our Liverpool Insect Testing Establishment (LITE) labs to discover how insecticide resistance is tested, and visited the iiCON: Infection Innovation Consortium's Infection Innovation Technology Laboratory (iiTECH) to see how advanced sensor technologies are being developed for healthcare.

And postdoctoral researchers, lab managers and enterprise and innovation colleagues shared their journeys and showcased the variety of career opportunities in science and research.

A 12-year study of endangered chimpanzees in Uganda has revealed persistent schistosomiasis infections, highlighting the need for long-term disease surveillance to protect endangered wildlife.

Researchers from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and international partners worked closely with Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary and research facility in Lake Victoria to follow almost 50 rescued chimpanzees.

Despite annual treatment with praziquantel, chimpanzees continued to be reinfected. The findings suggest that treatment alone is unlikely to protect animals living in areas where schistosomiasis is endemic.

Led by Dr Alexandra Juhász, the research will inform conservation efforts in Africa and beyond by emphasising the need for a One Health approach that combines more frequent treatment, regular health monitoring, and environmental management.

Professor Russell Stothard, senior author of the study, said: “This is the first time anywhere in the world that schistosomiasis infections have been followed in chimpanzees over such a long period.”
