KNOWLEDGE AND THE PERFECTION OF THE HUMAN SOUL
Within the Islamic philosophical tradition, knowledge is far more than the accumulation of information. It is a means of transforming the human soul, developing wisdom and preparing the individual for ultimate happiness.
Ibn Sīnā (رحمه الله عليه) explains that although the sciences differ in their subjects and methods, they share one fundamental purpose:
“All the sciences share a common benefit: bringing the human soul’s perfection into actuality and thereby preparing it for happiness in the Hereafter.”
— Ibn Sīnā, al-Shifāʾ: al-Ilāhiyyāt, Book One, Chapter Three, p. 17.
Mullā Ṣadrā (رحمه الله عليه) similarly presents knowledge as a form of spiritual and intellectual life:
“Indeed, ignorance is the greater death, while knowledge is the noblest life.”
— The Transcendent Philosophy of the Four Intellectual Journeys, Vol. 9, p. 176.
Reflecting upon his own path, Mullā Ṣadrā writes that he devoted his abilities to divine philosophy from the earliest years of his youth. For him, true wisdom required the union of two dimensions: expansiveness of the heart through practical wisdom and illumination through theoretical wisdom.
The true divine sage is therefore not merely someone who possesses knowledge, but someone whose intellect, character, and soul have all been transformed by it.
Knowledge is not merely acquired—it gives life, illuminates the heart, and elevates the human soul.
