"I thought this would simply be a hobby or a side hustle at best."
Little did Michelle Eaves know, it would be so much more.

Following your dream rarely arrives as one giant leap. It can be a culmination of choices, timing and that incessant urge to just do something about it.

For Michelle Eaves, she was working in marketing, watching designers do their thing, when she realised she wanted to be the one designing the space, and not branding it!

"I read lots of student reviews and was struck by the flexible online approach as well as the affordability at the time. I thought, I will follow my dream, and BAID can help me do it!"

This flexibility meant she could pursue an education in Interior Design around her existing responsibilities.

Today Michelle runs Colour Brave Interiors while still consulting in marketing, studying, and raising her boys.

There’s a lot more to Interior Design than meets the eye.

Some of the many skills include:

✔️ Space planning - layout, flow, reconfiguration - people centric planning
✔️ Visual communication - 2D/3D plans, drawings, mood boards - client clarity
✔️ Sourcing and specifying - curating furniture, fixtures and fittings, and managing procurement
✔️ Project coordination - timelines, schedules, liaising with contractors, engineers and tradespeople
✔️ Site presence - solving problems in real time

An interior designer's decisions directly impact people's safety and wellbeing. Every recommendation has to hold up against building regulations and health & safety codes. It's a profession with real responsibility, which is exactly why it commands real respect.

So, if you've been asking "do I even have what it takes to call myself a designer?", you should know that nobody arrives with this skillset pre-installed. Space planning, materials knowledge, regulations, coordination, communication, it's all learnable.

You don't need to already be a designer to start becoming one, but simply start it.

"I thought, actually, I want to be the one designing the space, not just branding it."

That was the moment everything changed for Michelle Eaves.

"I've learned to trust my creative instincts, and my instinct for colour especially is very strong. It feels like a gift that I need to share."

Michelle had 20+ years in marketing and retail, which would become her unexpected edge in the world of design. Then she enrolled in the Academy to build on her skills and knowledge. Today Michelle runs her own studio, Colour Brave Interiors, working across residential, commercial and holiday-let projects, all while consulting in marketing and raising two young boys.

"This will be my career for the rest of my life now."

Michelle needed to balance her family, work and studies and found the flexibility and affordability of the Academy ideal for her busy life.

If you've felt that same urge to design, just as Michelle did; it is not a coincidence. That's your inner designer calling.

Don’t let your drawing skills hold you back from a future in Interior Design.

Interior design sketches are in fact a tool to explore how furniture might sit in a room, how the proportions of a space work, or to quickly illustrate an idea to a client.
Its value is in what it communicates.

Sketching quickly and imperfectly is actually part of how good designers think. The act of drawing something out, even roughly, helps you notice details and questions you may have missed otherwise.

And drawing is only part of the process. Mood boards, photography, material references, floor plans, and models are also ways of developing and communicating an idea. Curiosity is a better starting point than a steady hand.

So if "I can't draw" has been the thing quietly talking you out of interior design, it was never a real barrier. It is actually a skill that can be learnt.

Interior Design is a skilled profession but the beauty of it is, it can all be learned.

Here are 7 essential skills that separate a creative hobbyist from a professional Interior Designer:

✔️ Creative visual thinking - understanding proportion, colour, texture, and composition.

✔️ Space planning - making the most out of every layout, size and function.

✔️ Drawings - sketches, mood boards, and floor plans.

✔️ Digital design skills – CAD, 3D modelling, and visualisation tools.

✔️ Materials - lighting, FF&E and construction knowledge.

✔️ Listening & client communication - presenting plans and understanding a brief.

✔️ Organisation & project management - budgets, timelines, and coordination.

Keep in mind that nobody arrives armed with all seven skills. Get started and as you grow as a student, you will emerge as a designer.

You can't walk into a room without mentally rearranging it? You save interior photos for no apparent reason? Sound familiar?

You may be a natural born designer.

While there is a skill set that every designer needs to learn, there are also soft skills that some people innately possess. Interior Design involves spatial planning, technical drawing and an understanding of textures and materials - but designers also need to be strong organisers, communicators, and problem-solvers.

It’s possible you are already halfway there and you don’t even know it!

Your instinct just needs a system in which to grow. How about refining that untethered enthusiasm and channeling it into real solid skills. It all culminates in a curated portfolio that becomes your calling card for professional work.

The only difference between you and a working designer is a decision to build on it.

Interior Designers who get it right, are the designers who have mastered the art of listening.

A designer's real job starts with asking the right questions, staying curious, and reading between the lines. What does the client actually need from the space? Why are they attracted to certain colours, styles or textures?

A client rarely says "I need better circulation between zones" - they say things like "I want it to feel like home". This is where you examine exactly what that means.

And it doesn't stop there. Great designers keep listening throughout the project - they listen to feedback, to hesitation, to the moment a client says "yes."

Listening is a soft skill that all creative professionals depend on. Use your instinct and practice empathy. Design will follow.

Have you ever walked into a room and it just didn’t feel right?
You’re thinking it’s the light, or the furniture size or the arrangement.

That's the instinct of an Interior Designer!

Interior design is about creating spaces where people move, live, and work.

And it all starts with an idea of how a space could feel. That feeling is created when you understand proportion, colour, texture and light. It’s plans, drawings, textures and solutions. All coming together in harmony.

If you've ever caught yourself imagining how a room could be better, you already have the beginning of a designer's mindset.

The only question left is what you do with it.
Join us and explore what it really takes to turn that instinct into a career.
