Meet Nigel Booth, BPC lecturer in Manchester, as he shares what he enjoys most about teaching, what inspires him in the classroom and some of the moments that make it all worthwhile ⤵️

1️⃣ What can students look forward to when they step into your classroom?
"You’re going to be apprehensive in your first advocacy workshop, but you can look forward to a supportive atmosphere that allows you to develop your skills to the max."

2️⃣ What has been a moment during your time at The University of Law where you have felt rewarded and inspired by teaching?
"It’s always rewarding to see my students pass their assessments and start pupillage. But the most rewarding moments can be the ones you don’t see coming... I had a student once who suffered a terrible accident during their main assessment period. They were ready to give up, but I worked with them to secure an additional attempt at the exams and they passed. That student is now a practising barrister."

More than 25 years after Jill Dando was shot dead outside her Fulham home, her murder remains unsolved.

Michael Mansfield KC is one of Britain's best-known criminal barristers and represented Barry George at his first trial and subsequent appeal for the 1999 murder.

Following his conviction of Jill Dando's murder in 2001, Barry George was acquitted following a retrial in 2008.

Michael Mansfield’s legal career has been devoted to defence work including prominent miscarriages of justice, including the Birmingham Six. He also acted for the family of Stephen Lawrence.

In this episode of Inside The Case, he examines the case with Frances Gibb, former Legal Editor of The Times and host of our podcast series. He also warns against replacing jury trials with judge-alone hearings, discusses examples of institutional failure in the criminal justice system and how mismanagement of funds by the government has contributed to the backlog in cases going to court.
