Sandeman Lodge No.1374
Consecrated in Dum Dum, Bengal, India in 1871 and later moved to London in 1967
Members originally were military men; locally stationed at the military ordnance factory (which produced the ‘dum dum’ expanding bullet).
Music at their Festive Boards was provided by the 107th Fusiliers and they also have visits by Rudyard Kipling noted in their history.
It’s also noted in their history that it was the Senior Wardens responsibility to ensure the local man (Wallah) responsible for fanning the room with the mechanical fan (punka) didn’t fall asleep whilst meetings were being conducted and to this day, a noted duty of the SW is to ‘keep the wallah awake’!
Now, an eclectic mix of members, but notably from Kenya (Indian heritage) and Nigeria.
A pleasure to witness an excellent initiation ceremony and a privilege to present two Grand Lodge Certificates. Thank you to David, my escorting officer on his first duty who was excellent and the lodge were extremely appreciative of his contact and organisation throughout.
