Are you modern or ancient?

Believe it or not, that was the question that split Freemasonry down the middle in the 18th century! It was our very own rivalry: the Moderns vs. the Antients.

It all kicked off when the two groups developed different ideas about how our ceremonies should be conducted. The Moderns made some updates to the original traditions which sparked outrage from a new group, the Antients, who believed these were too important to be changed. They felt so strongly about preserving the old ways that they started their own Grand Lodge!

For over 60 years they debated the proper way to do... well, almost everything!

Eventually, they buried the hatchet and united in 1813. It turns out the Antients had won on many points, leading to some of the meaningful ceremonies we cherish today, including our impressive Installation of a new Worshipful Master.

So, while we are "modern-day" Freemasons, our character was very much shaped by the "ancients"!

What does the badge of a mason tell you about them?

As a Brother, we see the journey from the pure white lambskin of an Entered Apprentice, through the rosettes of a Fellow Craft, to the tassels of a Master Mason. We even glance at the distinguished aprons for the Master of a Lodge, and the garter blue and gold of Provincial and Grand Officers.

You'd think that covers the whole collection, wouldn't you? Well, just when you think you've got a handle on it all... you discover there are more we've not even mentioned.

How much space do you have in your case? πŸ˜‰

From the distinct crimson of the Stewards to unique distinctions and those in other jurisdictions, the world of Masonic regalia has many more wonderful surprises... even beyond aprons.

Take a look through some of the other items in the wardrobe and their origins here: https://solomon.ugle.org.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=4699

There are how many Grand Lodges in the United Kingdom?

If you thought the history of Freemasonry is straightforward, think again!

England's Masonic history is a tale of a number of different Grand Lodges, and that isn't counting its neighbours. The main event here being the bitter rivalry between the 'Antients' and the 'Moderns', with others lasting only a few years before collapse.

So, what do you think the answer is? The following might help you decide: https://solomon.ugle.org.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=831
