📢 EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: Colours in the Field: Cotton, Empire and alternative futures in India

Join us for a panel discussion and exhibition viewing to celebrate the launch of Colours in the Fields in our Glass Corridor exhibition space.

Combining archival research with natural pigments screen printed on cotton, Colours in the Field unearths the colonial legacies of India’s extractive cotton monocultures and their connections to Manchester. Through stories of struggle, courage, and hope, it foregrounds the experiences of women farmers in India and asks how they might be forging more viable pathways as they transition to agroecology.

Zig-zagging between past, present, and future, the exhibition invites the audience to explore how colonial histories sediment, recombine, and mutate, producing presents fissured with possibilities for building futures ‘otherwise’.

Exhibition co-produced by Dr Arianna Tozzi (Researcher) and Himanshi Parmar (Artist).

Manchester Literature Festival returns from today until the 25 October, giving the city’s book lovers the opportunity to come together to share their passion for language, to be entertained, to learn, and to reflect on their connections with place, politics and people.

In one week: The Banners of Ed Hall: Art, Activism & Civic Action in Contemporary Britain

Join us for a research café discussing the history, politics and stories behind banners in art and activism.

Ed Hall has been making trade union, campaign and gallery banners since 1984 when he worked for Lambeth Council as it launched a political campaign against cuts in local authority spending. Since then, Ed has had many commissions, including for the artist Jeremy Deller and notably making 20 banners for the Manchester International Festival of 2012.

In this talk, Ed will describe how banners were developed in the industrial heartlands of Britain, drawing on examples such as the wonderful banners made by artists of the Suffragettes movement, the banner makers inspired by Walter Crane, and the current renaissance of banner making which includes contemporary artists incorporating banners in their work.

Presented in collaboration with the Drama Department, A History of Black Theatre in Manchester 1827–2020: Celebrating presence explores the artistry and entrepreneurship of people of African and Afro-Caribbean descent in theatre and performance in Manchester.

This event is part of Oxford Road Corridor’s The Cultural Welcome, which invites students to explore the arts, culture and heritage of one of the UK’s most exciting cultural destinations.

Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition and hear from the exhibition curators, academics and artists. There will also be a special treat for students joining us, so please bring your student ID.

📢 Now exhibiting in the Samuel Alexander Glass Corridor: A History of Black Theatre, 1827–2025: Celebrating Presence

To celebrate Black History Month, this exhibition explores the legacies of people of African and African-Caribbean descent within Manchester’s theatre and performance history.

Presented in partnership with The University of Manchester’s Drama Department, this exhibition draws from library, museum and archive collections including Archives+ and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust. This exhibition celebrates the achievements of Manchester's homegrown talent, major artists who have performed in Manchester and the work of venues like Contact, Green Room, Niamos and the Royal Exchange Theatre in supporting and showcasing Black excellence.

The launch of this exhibition will be celebrated with a launch event on Thursday 8 October, as part of Oxford Road Corridor's The Cultural Welcome. History Reimagined for a Changing World: Black History is British History

To celebrate Black History Month, this week we welcomed 297 students to campus from schools and colleges from across Greater Manchester. They were treated to a special lecture at the Martin Harris Centre with Professor of Public History, David Olusoga OBE, which was presented by Creative Manchester and the UoM History Department.

Prof Olusoga is a British-Nigerian historian, writer, broadcaster and filmmaker who has transformed public understanding of Black British history and the legacy of the British Empire. During the lecture, he shared his research and insights, and explored the important role of history in our changing world.

Following the lecture, David was joined in conversation by recent History & Politics graduate, Maleehah Rehman. Both answered excellent questions posed by the students.
