For over a century, students have arrived in Manchester, unpacked their bags, met their neighbours and made halls their home. The rooms might look different (not always…), but their experiences probably aren’t as different as you think.

This week marks a milestone in your first 100 days, starting a new life. it’s scary but you have got this!

Assorted promo pictures of Fallowfield in colour. How do the pictures compare to what you see on the University’s website today?

This Hall Formal took place in 1956. Different clothes, different decade, but the same excuse to get everyone together for an evening.

Someone lived in your room before you. They had lectures to go to, essays to write, and friends to make.
This photo of Ashburne Hall is a reminder that, while the details change, the experience of being a student in Manchester really doesn’t.

This photo shows a Rag (short for ‘Raising and Giving’) Week parade in 1923, which brought students together to dress up, have fun and raise money for charity.
The last Manchester Rag Week ended in 2003. Today, students continue to come together to raise money and support causes they care about.

This International Evening from 2006 brought students together to celebrate the different cultures and communities represented in their halls.

Before you moved in, other students did the exact same thing: unpacking, meeting their neighbours, figuring out the kitchen and making a life here for a while. And then, someone else will move into your room.

Yesterday we welcomed new students from all around the world at our presessional event in the Students’ Union, helping everyone get settled in to Manchester life.
