What happens to confidential waste after it leaves campus? ♻️
Recently, Rhiannon Hunt, PhD, Circular Economy Manager and Sam Hay, Waste and Recycling Officer, visited EMERGE Recycling’s Manchester site for a behind-the-scenes look at the secure destruction process and to complete a Waste Duty of Care audit.
Having worked with EMERGE Recycling for five years as our confidential waste partner, the visit provided an opportunity to review operational processes first-hand and reaffirm confidence in the secure, compliant and environmentally responsible handling of the University of Liverpool’s confidential waste.
The visit also highlighted how confidential waste can support circular economy principles. Once shredded, the University’s confidential paper waste is processed and remanufactured into new paper products, keeping materials in use and ensuring full traceability within the UK.
Our partnership with EMERGE also supports wider social value through initiatives including FareShare Greater Manchester, which redistributes surplus in-date food to frontline charities, schools and community organisations, and Touch Wood, which gives waste timber a second life through reuse, resale and upcycling.👏
