CONFLICT RESOLUTION STRATEGIES
In the school of negotiations, we often discuss conflict management strategies according to the Blake-Mouton matrix. In an original twist, Carlo Manlio Cipolla applied his 5 laws of human stupidity to a similar grid. How do you find this model of human behavior rationality?
Five Universal Laws of Human Stupidity
In 1976, Italian economic historian Carlo Manlio Cipolla published an essay describing the fundamental laws of a force he considers the greatest danger to humanity's existence: Stupidity.
The main idea of the work is that stupid people are numerous and irrational. They create problems for others without obvious benefit to themselves, reducing the overall well-being of society. There is no defense against them, except for the hard work of intelligent people to compensate for the losses inflicted by their stupid counterparts.
Cipolla's Five Main Laws of Human Stupidity:
Law 1: Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
Regardless of how many idiots you see around you, you inevitably underestimate their number. You might assume people are smart based on external factors like job, education, and other traits we mistakenly think exclude stupidity. But it's not so.
Law 2: The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
Stupidity is a constant variable. Every category has its share of stupid people, regardless of gender, race, nationality, education level, or income. For example, there are stupid college professors in every nation and every country. But it's impossible to say how many.
Law 3. Cipolla's Golden Law: A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
Cipolla identifies three other phenotypes existing alongside the stupid.
First are intelligent people, whose actions benefit everyone.
Second are bandits, who benefit at the expense of others.
And third are helpless people, who enrich others at their own expense. See picture.
Non-stupid people are a varied and changing category. Sometimes a person acts intelligently, sometimes like a bandit, sometimes he is helpless. The stupid, on the contrary, are a paragon of constancy, always obeying their own idiocy.
They are particularly dangerous because it's difficult for intelligent people to understand their actions. One can understand a bandit; there's logic in his actions. You can predict his moves and take defensive measures.
But this is absolutely impossible with stupid people. There's no sense, no gain, no plan in their actions. No way to rationally predict them.
Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.
Nothing can be done with a stupid person. A society collapses under the weight of its stupid citizens. Societies that progress despite the actions of stupid people have a high percentage of intelligent people balancing the losses caused by idiots.
"Decreases in the population of intelligent people inevitably strengthens the destructive power of stupid ones," concludes Cipolla. "And the country goes to hell."

**STRATEGY OF BEHAVIOR IN CONFLICT**

Originally, in a matrix similar in meaning, Carlo Manlio Cipolla laid out his 5 laws of human stupidity. How do you like this model of human behavior rationality?

Stupidity is a variable that remains constant. Gender, race, nationality, education level, and income — all categories have a percentage of stupid people. For example, there are stupid college professors in any nation and in any country. But how many there are is impossible to say.
**Law 3. Cipolla's Golden Law: A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.**
Cipolla distinguishes three phenotypes of people existing alongside stupid ones.
The first is intelligent people, whose actions bring good to everyone.
The second is bandits, gaining benefit at the expense of others.
And the third is helpless people, enriching other people at their own expense. See picture.
Non-stupid people are a disjointed and fluid category. Sometimes a person acts reasonably, sometimes like a bandit, sometimes he is helpless. The stupid, on the contrary, are a paragon of consistency, always submitting to their idiocy.
They are especially dangerous, as it is difficult for intelligent people to understand their actions. You can understand a bandit, there is logic in his actions. You can anticipate his actions and take defensive measures.
But this is absolutely impossible with regard to stupid people. There is no meaning in their actions, no benefit, no plan. No possibility of rationally predicting their actions.

A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.
It's impossible to do anything with a stupid person. A society collapses under the weight of its stupid citizens. And societies developing despite the actions of stupid people have a high percentage of intelligent people balancing the losses from idiots.
"Decreases in the population of intelligent people inevitably strengthens the destructive power of stupid ones," concludes Cipolla. "And the country goes to hell."
