We’re proud that taking lead out of petrol is part of our history

Every time you fill up a car with petrol today, one dangerous ingredient is missing.
Lead.

Decades before leaded petrol was finally removed from UK forecourts in 1999, University of Reading chemistry Professor Derek Bryce-Smith was sounding the alarm about lead pollution from vehicle emissions.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, his research and campaigning helped build the scientific case for change, challenging accepted thinking about the effects of lead on people and the environment.

It took decades, but the evidence helped change policy and practice across Europe.

As we celebrate our centenary year, we’re proud of research that didn’t simply identify a problem. It helped make the world safer.

What does Pope Leo XIV's lung cancer surgery mean for his recovery?

Following reports of the Pope's diagnosis and surgery, cancer biologist Professor Phil Dash, Head of Biological Sciences at the University of Reading has been helping explain what the treatment involves.

"The Pope has undergone a surgical procedure called a lobectomy in which one of the lobes of the lung has been removed. If his cancer is small and located entirely within this lobe then the treatment is likely to be highly effective with a good chance of being curative."

Professor Dash, who researches how cancer spreads through the body, also explains that doctors will need to monitor for signs of the disease elsewhere.

"In patients where surgery isn't possible, or where surgery isn't effective, there are other treatment options such as immunotherapy or targeted therapies which have significantly improved survival rates in lung cancer patients in recent years."

It's an important reminder of how advances in cancer research are giving more patients treatment options, and why understanding the science behind the headlines matters.

You might be getting a call from one of these friendly faces very soon!

Meet some of our brilliant students who'll be picking up the phone to Reading alumni and supporters over the coming weeks, as part of our Centenary Calling campaign.

For generations, the kindness and generosity of our University community has helped make Reading a place where people can learn, grow and find opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach.

Now, our student callers are hoping to inspire that same generosity for the generations to come.

They'll be sharing their experiences of life at Reading, hearing from those who came before them, and talking about how donations can make a real difference.

That could mean helping a student afford university through our Beyond 100 Bursary, giving local schoolchildren more opportunities to learn outdoors in our new Learning Garden, or being there for students when they need support the most.

Our callers are pictured here in the Learning Garden, one of the projects they're hoping to help grow.

If you're a Reading graduate, we'd love you to take their call. It's a chance to hear from the next generation of Reading students, share a little of your own experience, and perhaps help make someone else's university journey possible.

Our annual Winter Festival returns to Whiteknights campus on Thursday 26 November, and we're looking for local businesses, creatives, charities and organisations to help bring our Winter Market to life.

From handmade gifts and festive treats to independent traders and community activities, we'd love to hear from people interested in joining us.

The market will take place inside Reading Students' Union, welcoming students, staff, families and our wider local community for an evening of festive celebrations.
