There were amazing scenes last week at Wi******er Science Centre as the young stars of our LifeLab programme lit up the sky at their glittering film premiere and awards ceremony.

Hosted by Zoe Hanson of The So SO show, the event celebrated their achievements in the co-creation of LifeLab's Young Researcher Training Programme and the Va**ng Resources Toolkit.

This extra special occasion brought together the young people and their families with LifeLab's supporters, partners and funders to recognise their important work. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a success!

One of our longest serving researchers is retiring.

For more than 50 years, Professor Freda Stevenson has been at the forefront of cancer immunology discovery.

Her work has changed the way we treat cancers like chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and she has helped many young researchers develop their careers.

Freda has received international recognition for her research and has been described as a 'trailblazer' and an 'inspiration'. Everyone would like to wish her the very best for her retirement.

Great to see Year 2 medical student Aman Iftikhar being named as a finalist for an international medical speaking competition hosted by the iMED conference.

As a result, he was invited to give a presentation on vascular surgery to the conference held at the Auditório Prof. Dr. Armando Simões dos Santos in Lisbon, Portugal.

Aman had to discuss and justify what treatment he would give to a patient. Speaking about the experience, Aman said: “It allowed me to develop my public speaking skills, with regard to a medical topic and I am extremely grateful for having been able to have had this opportunity.”

Our researchers have developed a new scoring system that could help give more patients with rare diseases a diagnosis.

The method - known as GenePy – was used to create a score for each disease-associated gene for each person. The researchers used it to calculate scores for 2,862 genes in over 78,000 participants in the 100,000 genomes project.

They then looked at people with the highest scores for each gene, to see if their symptoms matched those of the disease that gene was associated with.

Using this approach, the researchers identified potential diagnoses for 14% of undiagnosed participants in the project.

Congratulation's to the 200+ Year3 students who presented their research project at the recent BM conference. experienced what it is like to present their own research at a conference.

The Year 3 research project module of the BM programme gives our students a flavour of what research entails. Students can choose any type of research project, from discovery-stage and translational lab-based, to clinical audits, service evaluations, or systematic reviews.

The module ends in a two-day conference where students present their findings to their peers and supervisors in a session chaired by Faculty staff. Students on the BM(EU) course, Southampton’s undergraduate medical degree delivered jointly in the UK and Germany, also take part from Kassel via live stream.

This year’s projects covered a diverse range of inter- and multi-disciplinary topics including pathology, global health, psychiatry, medical physics and bioengineering, oncology and cancer immunology, dermatology, medical education and maternal, foetal and neonatal physiology.

A special thank you to the 70+ members of Faculty staff who were involved in the organisation and running of the event!

Congratulations to fourth-year student, Emma Naunton, who won the the Primary Medical Care team's art competition.

Students were asked to design a creative piece that focused on holistic care, and how the physical, psychological and emotional ways we live can affect our general wellness.

Emma’s piece of digital art entitled, “Don’t go breaking my heart”, has been praised by cardiac charity, Heartbeat, which is looking after heart patients and their families in the region.

Members of the Primary Care Research Centre recently attended the launch of a new report highlighting the health benefits of herbs and spices in the diet.

The Spice up your life report, led by Pukka Herbs, makes three important policy recommendations:

🍲Include herbs and spices in the Eatwell Guide
👩‍🔬Invest in research on the benefits of herbs and spices for metabolic disease
✏️The benefits of herbs and spices (both flavour and health benefits) to be taught as part of improved food lessons in schools

The University of Southampton group, which attended the launch at the Houses of Parliament, included Immaculate Okello, Mio Hu, Merlin Willcox, and Xiaowen Zhang.

Immaculate is currently undertaking a PhD, which is part-funded by Pukka Herbs, focusing on improving self-management of type 2 diabetes in patients of African origin in the UK. The results will support recommendations one and two from the report.

Educators are part of a new partnership with Alzheimer’s Society & Brighton & Sussex Medical School to improve dementia awareness in undergraduate medical education. Rebecca D’Silva, from the Faculty of Medicine, said: “Giving our students early contact with patients and their families empowers them to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom, into real world situations. It helps them develop their skills and their
confidence during their training. We are delighted to be working in
partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society and Brighton and Sussex
Medical School to enhance our student experience and improve
their knowledge and understanding of dementia.”

A laminectomy is a surgical procedure which involves removal of the lamina - a region of each vertebra (backbone). Removal allows for access to the structures associated with the spinal cord. It is usually performed in the cervical and lumbar regions, and less often in the thoracic region. The operation is performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves, to remove herniated intervertebral discs, or to remove tumours 🩺💉🩻

Some of you will remember Abi’s inspirational story from our campaign to build the Centre for Cancer Immunology.

Abi was just 27 years old when she was given the devastating news that she had cancer, and was given two weeks to live.

With time running out, our doctors recommended trying cancer immunotherapy, making it clear that although the treatment might work, there was a risk it could also speed up the progression of the disease.

Miraculously, within six months the tumours had shrunk, and no active cancer cells were detected. It was one of the most remarkable cases Southampton doctors had seen and demonstrated the amazing power of immunotherapy.

At the time, all Abi and her husband Ross could think about was the all the things they would never do and having a family was one of them.

But seven years on, thanks to immunotherapy, Abi is thriving and enjoying life as a mum-of-two! We caught up with to see how she and her beautiful family were doing:

Today we want to give a special shout out to alumnus Keith Walker. Keith is currently fundraising for the Centre for Cancer Immunology - University of Southampton by doing a Jailbreak-style cycle ride with a bike that he bought for only £10!

He started off in Norwich and has made it to the Czech Republic - He has currently cycled over 800 miles, with no plans to stop
anytime soon! He has raised an amazing £727 of his £1000 target.

Keith is doing this in the support of the extraordinary research that is being carried out in the centre. He said “The University of Southampton are doing some amazing research on the back of vaccination research. They are now using this research in the field of treating cancer, not only finding ways of dealing with one cancer but most excitingly the treatment can then deal with any subsequent cancers, thus eliminating any secondaries.”

We want to say a big thankyou to Keith for supporting the Cancer Immunology Fund, and by doing it in such a creative and fun way! Keith will be helping our scientists to develop cutting-edge cancer treatments, which will change the lives of cancer patients and their families and help us to win the fight against cancer.

If you want to support this cause or run your own fundraiser, please message us directly or email [email protected].
