A University of Southampton-led study has found that people in Hampshire’s most deprived areas are less likely to survive a cardiac arrest.

Researchers analysed ambulance data from more than 4,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) and found a significant link between neighbourhood deprivation and lower survival rates.

🔎 Key findings:
✔️ Only 10% of OHCA patients survived for at least 30 days.
✔️ Deprivation was linked to worse survival rates, even after adjusting for factors like age and ambulance response times.
✔️ Survivors were, on average, younger than those who died.

The study highlights the urgent need for further research and targeted interventions to improve survival rates in deprived communities.

🚨 Did you know that respiratory diseases are the third leading cause of death in the UK? That one in six NHS beds is occupied by respiratory patients? That the most deprived communities are seven times more likely to die from lung conditions?

To tackle this, the University of Southampton is joining forces with leading universities, clinicians, policymakers, and industry experts to launch CARRii (Centre for Applied Respiratory Research, Innovation and Impact).

Launched yesterday at the House of Commons, CARRii aims to:
✅ Reduce hospital admissions for asthma, COPD, and respiratory infections by 20%
✅ Ease NHS winter pressures
✅ Address health inequalities in respiratory care

🔬 Transforming Cancer Treatment at the University of Southampton |

From early detection to personalised cancer vaccines, researchers at the University of Southampton are leading the fight against cancer. Here are just a few of our advancements from the past year:
🧬 March 2024 – Investigating how body composition affects chemotherapy side effects in women with secondary breast cancer.
🎓 April 2024 – £1.4M from Cancer Research UK to train doctors as clinical scientists dedicated to tackling cancer.
🩸 April 2024 – New treatment approaches for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia led by Professor Francesco Forconi are being implemented at Southampton General Hospital.
🚀 May 2024 – The Southampton Clinical Trials Unit chosen to run the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad, fast-tracking access to personalised cancer immunotherapies.
🛡️ August 2024 – Discovery that natural killer cells instinctively attack a cancer-driving protein, opening new avenues for immunotherapy.
🔎 December 2024 – Identification of a unique fibroblast that may boost the immune system’s ability to attack tumours, potentially making immunotherapy more effective.

These breakthroughs bring us closer to a future where cancer is preventable, treatable, and curable. On World Cancer Day, let’s recognise the power of research and the incredible scientists making it happen.

🎮 Help us choose the best game to progress a children’s sight study! 👀

Dr. Jay Self, Associate Professor and Consultant Ophthalmologist, has secured funding from private equity firm Bluewater to launch the innovative NystagME app survey study.

This project, in collaboration with the University of Southampton's School of Mathematical Sciences and Wi******er School of Art, is creating digital games that test vision in children with conditions like nystagmus.

These games record vision data that traditional tests miss—all while kids play!

Once finalised, they’ll support clinical trials and studies for new treatments.

We need your feedback to decide which game to develop further! Anyone of any age, with or without an eye condition, can take part—it only takes five minutes.
