Future second years can you beat this?

For their second year lab extension Xander Dolman, Alex Drew, Calvert Maxwel, Aaron Robbins and Harry Russel have created what can only be described as one of the most important experiments in recent Physoc and Astrosoc history.

They used optics and Fourier Analysis to “Expanding on the basics of how light diffracts, we used a Fourier transform to model the diffraction patterns of light through different apertures.

By creating a digital representation of the aperture function in the spatial domain and transforming it into the frequency domain, we could predict the resulting intensity distributions at different distances from the initial source.

We initially approached this by applying transforms to single and double slits and comparing our results to experimental data, after which we began to model the patterns of more complex apertures.

By reconstructing the phase of our initial light source using a Python program that utilised the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm, we were able to generate phase mask patterns that would yield any diffracted image when light is passed through them. ”
