Did you catch last night's episode of ?

The residents of Poplar had to deal with a nasty outbreak of Weil's disease after refuse began to pile up in the streets.

Our Dr Tom Wingfield was an expert adviser on the episode's Weil's disease storyline - an unpleasant infection that can be passed to people from animals, contaminated soil or water.

The disease, also known as leptospirosis, is rare in the UK but much more common globally.

In June, the A∙WOL antifilarial drug discovery team won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s prestigious Horizon Prize for their pioneering work on anti-Wolbachia drugs to combat filariasis. This incredible collaboration spans CNTD, CDD, Liverpool University, Imperial College London, University of Bonn, Astra Zeneca, and Eisai Inc.

Their work is a vital step forward in eliminating this debilitating neglected tropical disease. Read more here: https://lstm.ac/AWOLprize

Today, to mark World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, we’re taking a closer look at one of our projects aimed at tackling the growing threat of the NTD dengue in Burkina Faso. LSTM researchers are working with local communities in the country to develop methods for mosquito surveillance, control and disease outbreak prediction.

Dengue is transmitted to humans by infected Aedes mosquitoes, and while many infections are mild, the virus can occasionally cause more severe disease and prove fatal.

The DengRIP project is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, and is led by Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou in partnership with the IRSS : Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé/ DRO (IRSS) in Burkina Faso, de recherche pour le développement (IRD) in France, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas CSIC in Spain, University of Oxford and the University of Glasgow in the UK.

David Weetman, Reader in Vector Biology and co-lead on the project, explains more in our short video https://lstm.ac/dengue

The LSTM led Tiny Targets programme has been pivotal in reaching elimination milestones for sleeping sickness in key regions. With Tiny Targets kindly donated by their manufacturer, Vestergaard, the programme continues to make an extraordinary impact.

Vestergaard’s signing of the Kigali Declaration will be another huge step towards achieving the 2030 elimination target for sleeping sickness as set out in the WHO road map for NTDs.

On World NTD Day, Vestergaard signs the Kigali Declaration, formalizing its commitment to sleeping sickness elimination with the annual donation of 150,000 Tiny Targets for vector control.

Congratulations to Professor Eve Worrall!

Eve is the final of the seven newly promoted professors at LSTM who we have been profiling over recent days.

Professor Worrall's work in the Department of Clinical Sciences focuses on health economics. She is an expert in the economic evaluation of public health interventions in low- and middle-income countries, leading multiple evaluations in malaria, TB, neglected tropical diseases and more recently non-communicable diseases.

Her other interests are in policy analysis and knowledge translation, where she seeks to understand how scientific evidence can best inform health policy and improve outcomes.

Professor Worrall has worked in global health for more than 25 years in a career that spans research, consultancy and management roles in academia, philanthropy and the commercial sector.

Congratulations to Professor Adam Roberts!

Adam is one of seven newly promoted professors at LSTM, representing research areas ranging from vector biology to health system resilience.

Professor Roberts' work in the Department of Tropical Disease Biology focuses on the increasingly urgent challenge of antimicrobial resistance, and the development of new drugs to treat infections. His research seeks to better understand the biological consequences of AMR within enteric bacteria, the molecular mechanisms of how AMR is disseminated among bacteria, and antimicrobial development and drug discovery.

He also leads the popular citizen science project Swab and Send, which invites us all to join in the important search for new antibiotics.
