"The UK has been a leader in funding and conducting research and development targeted at neglected diseases over the last two decades. Along with saving countless lives within some of the world’s poorest communities, that investment has had real health and economic benefits in the UK."

Following the publication of our report with Impact Global Health into the staggering health and economic benefits of investment into neglected disease R&D, Professors David Lalloo and Liam Smeeth from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Malaria No More CEO Astrid Bonfield have written for the Daily Telegraph on the need for the UK to continue to demonstrate global leadership.

Britain has an ethical responsibility to lead on R&D – but there are widespread benefits for the country too

A new report from Impact Global Health in collaboration with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has revealed that UK research and development into neglected diseases offers a staggering return on investment, in both health and economic terms.

The UK’s funding – if sustained – would produce a societal return across the world of £1.39 trillion by 2040, including saving nearly 1.5 million lives.

Published on World Malaria Day, the report also found that the UK directly benefits from R&D into diseases like malaria, HIV and tuberculosis.

Professor David Lalloo, Vice-Chancellor of LSTM, said: “Behind each one of the numbers is a person, a family, a community whose lives have been saved or changed for the better. We believe that as one of the richest nations in the world, the UK has an ethical responsibility to take a lead on breakthroughs in neglected diseases.”

Artist Luke Jerram's monumental celestial sculpture 'Helios' is in place at Liverpool Cathedral until May 9.

Jerram's relationship with Liverpool is a long one - from his first trip to an art gallery at 16 years old to exhibiting huge sculptures of the Moon and Earth in the city over recent years.

But what's less well-known is his research collaboration with LSTM and the ARISE consortium, which is outlined in his new book 'Of Earth and Sky'. He joined social scientists from LSTM and partners in three countries to explore how art can engage communities to express their concerns, hopes and dreams and co-create innovate solutions for action.

Jerram said: “I've been working as an artist for 28 years, so I've had about 900 exhibitions now and I've worked with all sorts of institutions and organisations all around the world, and I'm often collaborating with scientists to help communicate their research.

“But this was the first project, I suppose, where we were delivering a creative project that was designed specifically to physically help a community in a practical way. So this wasn't just about science, communication or art. This was actually about delivering a project that was going to bring fundamental change that benefits the community.”

Five years on the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are continuing to reflect on its legacy for global health.

Dr Tom Wingfield played an active role in the clinical response in Liverpool, as well as at LSTM and as a trusted voice in national media coverage to keep the public up-to-date. Alongside his clinical role, he is a TB expert and researcher, and deputy leader of the Centre for TB Research at LSTM.

In this piece, Tom emphasises the lessons that must be learned from COVID for any future disease outbreaks, including ensuring continuity of care for longstanding global health issues like TB. He also stresses the importance of collaborations between the public, the media and scientists as a way to build trust and counter misinformation.

Congratulations to Dr Rosie Steege who has been awarded an Academy of Medical Science Springboard grant.

Dr Steege’s research will focus on vulnerable young people in Bangladesh who have been displaced by urban informal settlements due to climate disasters, in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries.

Over the past 10 years, the Academy’s Springboard programme has invested £44m in early-career researchers, supporting scientists across the UK to develop solutions that improve human health and wellbeing.

Last night, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's Chris Myerscough competed in the regional final of FameLab, the world's largest science communication competition.

He gave an engaging and charismatic three minute talk on his team's research into pneumococcus, a bacteria that many of us carry but can cause infections in the lung, sinus, ears, and even the bloodstream.

His team will be back at Liverpool's Pint of Science Festival in May, so join us then to find out more about this fascinating area of work. Tickets will be available soon.
