Today, to mark World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, we’re taking a closer look at one of our projects aimed at tackling the growing threat of the NTD dengue in Burkina Faso. LSTM researchers are working with local communities in the country to develop methods for mosquito surveillance, control and disease outbreak prediction.
Dengue is transmitted to humans by infected Aedes mosquitoes, and while many infections are mild, the virus can occasionally cause more severe disease and prove fatal.
The DengRIP project is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, and is led by Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou in partnership with the IRSS : Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé/ DRO (IRSS) in Burkina Faso, @Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) in France, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas CSIC in Spain, University of Oxford and the University of Glasgow in the UK.
David Weetman, Reader in Vector Biology and co-lead on the project, explains more in our short video https://lstm.ac/dengue
