The Roman Road Project - Sheffield A collaboration between the University of Sheffield and the wider Sheffield community seeking archaeological evidence for Roman routes in the local area

The Roman Road Project (Sheffield) represents a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and the wider local community that seeks to understand Roman transport links within the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire area through archaeological fieldwork. The research started with a study of the proposed link between the Roman forts at Templeborough (Rotherham) and Navio (Brough-on-Noe, Derb

yshire). For nearly a century and a half a northern and straight route between the forts was supported by the archaeological community even though very little evidence exists. However, field survey and excavation carried out by the University of Sheffield and the Time Travellers Archaeology Group during the past twelve months suggests a southern alternative. The Roman Road Project is open to everyone (and free to join) regardless of archaeological experience and over the coming year is looking for community volunteers to assist with landscape survey and excavation. The focus of the coming year will be to obtain dating evidence for any possible Roman roads through excavation of surveyed features and will primarily concentrate within the areas of Treeton, Ringinglow, Stanage and the Hope Valley.
