How to Become a Professional Engineer
The First Vice President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Ghana, Prof. Humphrey Danso delivered an insightful presentation on "How to Become a Professional Engineer."
He encouraged students to aspire to professional certification and outlined the pathway to achieving professional status:
1. Complete a first degree in engineering.
2. Work under the supervision of a certified professional engineer for up to three years.
3. Apply for professional membership.
4. Write the required professional examinations.
5. Successfully pass the professional interview.
Prof. Danso also explained the various categories of IET membership, including Professional Engineer (P.E.), Professional Engineering Technologist (P.E.T.), and Fellow, which is conferred on experienced professionals who have made significant contributions to the engineering profession.
He encouraged students to join IET Ghana as student members by picking up the application forms he made available. He highlighted the benefits of membership, including professional training, introductory letters for internships and other professional opportunities, networking, mentorship, and participation in annual programmes organized by IET Ghana.
He announced that the membership application forms had been left with the Faculty Officer, Rev. Foster Aharon, for interested students to obtain and complete.
Prof. Danso further disclosed plans to establish an IET Student Chapter at Ho Technical University (HTU) to promote students' professional development and active engagement with the engineering profession.
