Chalkidiki, a stunning region in Northern Greece, better known for its beautiful peninsulas, crystal clear waters, and stunning pine forests. This travel guide will help the eco-conscious and budget travellers explore Chalkidiki while minimizing their environmental footprint and expenses.

1. Getting there:

Chalkidiki is easily accessible from various cities like Kavala or Thessaloniki. The last one, is the nearest major city, and has an international airport as well as a port where long distance ferries and cruises arrive. Here are some eco-friendly and budget travel options:

- Public Transport: Buses from Thessaloniki to Chalkidiki are frequent and very affordable. The KTEL Chalkidiki bus service offers regular routes to several points of the peninsula.

- Carpooling: Platforms like BlaBlaCar can help you find rides with other travellers, reducing costs and environmental impact.

- Cycling: For the more adventurous, cycling from Thessaloniki to Chalkidiki is a greenest option. The route is scenic and offers a closer connection to nature.

2. Eco-Friendly Accommodations:

- Eco-Friendly Hotels and Guesthouses: Examples include Ekies All Senses Resort in Vourvourou and Ammouliani Island's Agionissi Resort.

- Camping: Such as Armenistis and Stavros, which provide affordable lodging in natural settings while living in the heart of nature.


3. Sustainable Activities and Destinations:

Sithonia Peninsula:

- Mount Itamos: Hike through the pine forests of Mount Itamos for breathtaking views and a chance to spot local wildlife.

- Kavourotripes Beach: This secluded beach is perfect for a peaceful day by the sea.

Kassandra Peninsula:

- Sani Wetlands: Home to diverse bird species.

- Bike Tours: Explore the coastline and the cozy local villages.

Athos Peninsula:

- Mount Athos: Though only men can visit the monastic state, and is needed a reservation which takes some time to get approved, the surrounding areas offer beautiful trails and beaches.
