【Prof. Christopher Chao on optimising university funding mechanisms to drive industry development through innovation】
The National 15th Five-Year Plan calls for deeply integrating technological innovation and industrial innovation to continuously foster new quality productive forces, supporting Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology centre, and deepening industry-academia-research collaboration with the Chinese Mainland. Basic research is the wellspring of technological innovation, and universities serve as the mainstay of basic research as well as a core component of the nation's strategic science and technology strength. Hong Kong is home to multiple world-class universities with remarkable achievements in basic research. Yet, for groundbreaking scientific discoveries to truly translate into new quality productive forces, they must progress from scientific discovery to technological breakthroughs, and from the laboratory to industrial application. Prof. Christopher Chao, Senior Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, penned an article in Wen Wei Po, suggesting the HKSAR Government adjust the evaluation orientation of university research funding schemes, enhance the coordination mechanism for research grants, steer university research towards addressing frontier technology needs of industries, and strengthen the effectiveness of research commercialisation, thereby realising the policy goal of driving industrial innovation through technological innovation.

【「市建局 x 理大點亮社會創新比賽 2026」圓滿結束】
由市區重建局（市建局）與香港理工大學（理大）應用社會科學系首度合辦的「市建局 x 理大點亮社會創新比賽 2026」（比賽），今日於理大校園圓滿結束並舉行頒獎典禮。在理大科技及創新政策研究中心與Esri 中國（香港）有限公司的支持下，本屆比賽旨在鼓勵中學生深入了解和探討香港市區更新的議題，並以市建局兩個市區更新項目—— 洗衣街／花墟道發展計劃及卑利街／嘉咸街發展計劃為研習範圍及發揮創意，為舊區制定創新且可行的地方營造或社區營造方案。是次比賽反應熱烈，共吸引全港 64 所中學、近 400 名學生踴躍參與；決賽匯報暨頒獎典禮更獲逾 220 位中學校長、師生及各界嘉賓出席，共同見證青年人的創意成果。

頒獎典禮的主禮嘉賓包括中華人民共和國香港特別行政區政府政務司司長陳國基先生、市建局主席周松崗先生，以及理大常務及學務副校長黃永德教授。市建局行政總監蔡宏興先生、理大醫療及社會科學院院長岑浩强教授，以及理大應用社會科學系系主任兼科技及創新政策研究中心聯席主任崔永康教授亦出席擔任典禮嘉賓。

【URA x PolyU Igniting Social Innovation Competition 2026 concludes successfully】
The URA x PolyU Igniting Social Innovation Competition 2026 (the Competition), jointly organised by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and the Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) under an inaugural partnership, successfully concluded today with an award presentation ceremony held on the PolyU campus. Supported by the PolyU Policy Research Centre for Innovation and Technology (PReCIT) and Esri China (Hong Kong), the Competition aimed to empower secondary school students to explore and gain in-depth understanding of urban renewal in Hong Kong. Centred on two URA urban renewal projects – the Sai Yee Street / Flower Market Road Development Scheme and the Peel Street / Graham Street Development Scheme, the Competition invited students to use innovative thinking in developing feasible place-making or community-making proposals. The Competition garnered an enthusiastic response, attracting nearly 400 students from 64 secondary schools. Over 220 principals, teachers, students and guests also gathered to witness the innovative achievements of the young talents.

The award presentation ceremony was officiated by Mr CHAN Kwok-ki, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region of the People’s Republic of China; Mr CHOW Chung-kong, Chairman of the URA; and Prof. WONG Wing-tak, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU. Distinguished guests included Ar Donald CHOI, Managing Director of the URA; Prof. David SHUM, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences; and Prof. Eric CHUI, Head of APSS and Co-Director of PReCIT.

【Prof. Christopher Chao on nurturing international technology transfer talents】
The 4th cohort of the Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) certification programme in Jinjiang has recently concluded. In an interview with Jinjiang Economy News, Prof. Christopher Chao, Senior Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Director of PReCIT, shared that the RTTP programme has been continuously developed since its launch in Jinjiang. Anchored in the city's private manufacturing industrial foundation, the programme updates its case library with the unique industrial characteristics of each host city. Its training footprint has now expanded to key sci-tech innovation hubs including Shenzhen, Wuhan and Nanjing, gradually establishing itself as a national benchmark brand for technology transfer talent cultivation.

由香港理工大學（理大）晉江技術創新研究院、科技及創新政策研究中心、知識轉移及創業處主辦，以及福建泉州人才發展集團有限公司、中關村硬創空間（晉江）科技有限公司承辦的第四期國際註冊技術轉移經理人（RTTP）資格認證課程於8月7至8日在晉江舉行，吸引50位來自政府、科技信息、醫療健康、工業、智慧城市、綜合產業、高校科研、知識產權、技術轉移服務機構等領域的技術轉移人才參與，聚焦產學研對接與融資戰略，兼具戰略高度與實戰深度。

【Prof. Christopher Chao on new energy vehicles adoption in Hong Kong】
To align with the national “dual carbon” goals, the HKSAR Government is committed to achieving carbon neutrality before 2050. The national 15th Five-Year Plan also clearly identifies “accelerating comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development” as a core direction. Among Hong Kong’s major emission sources, the transport sector accounts for nearly 20% of total carbon emissions, making it a key area for low-carbon transition. Different transport scenarios require different new energy technologies, and identifying the most suitable development path for Hong Kong has become a focal point for the next stage of policy attention. Prof. Christopher Chao, Senior Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Director of PReCIT, penned an article in Wen Wei Po, sharing the findings of a research project supported by the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit. The research team, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, and the Environmental Protection Department, assessed public awareness through questionnaire surveys and online sentiment analysis. By integrating real vehicle operation data and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis, the team examined coverage gaps in the public charging network, and proposed concrete policy recommendations for Hong Kong’s transition to new energy vehicles.

【Prof. Eric Chui appointed to Social Workers Registration Board】
Prof. Eric Chui, Head of Department of Applied Social Sciences of PolyU and Co-Director of PReCIT, has been appointed as a member of the Social Workers Registration Board. The appointment will take effect from 30 June 2026, for a term of three years.

The Board handles social worker registration matters and monitors the professional conduct of registered social workers.
