The thesis compares three translations of Volume V of The Selected Works of Mao Zedong carried out by the Chinese Foreign Languages Press, the CIA-funded Joint Publication Research Service, and the American Ivy-league college Brown University. The translations of Mao produced by these institutions are viewed as instances of knowledge creation, extending and reinforcing particular ways of looking at Mao and his work in the English-speaking world. Some of Dr. Sharkeyโ€™s perspectives on the translation of Mao into English are presented in the article โ€œTranslation and the Making of History: The Objectification of Mao Zedong,โ€ recently published in World Literature Studies.

Dr. Sharkey credits the dynamic research environment at the Department of Translation with giving him the space and inspiration to conduct truly interdisciplinary research bridging translation with history, historiography, and sociological institutionalism.

The Translation Process Research Workshop, held between 20 and 24 July 2026, concluded successfully, featuring lectures from scholars such as Professor Michael Carl, Prof. Janice Pan, and Prof. Jan Louis Kruger.

Our participants, both PhD students and early career researchers, greatly enjoyed this five-day hybrid workshop, which focused on recent developments in empirical translation process research (TPR), interpreting, and localisation. Participants were introduced to the CRITT Translation Process Research Database (TPR-DB) and learned how to extract, interpret, and apply process data in empirical research. Through training in Jupyter Notebook, participants were equipped with skills to annotate, analyze, and visualize translation data.

The workshop included two morning and two afternoon sessions per day that consisted of lectures, practical sessions, and students' project discussions. Our strong team of expert instructors covered various aspects of TPR, interpreting, and localization. There were also opportunities for participants to present and discuss their own projects.

The workshop was complemented with two evening lectures by Prof. Douglas Robinson and Dr. Julian Kiverstein, during which participants exchanged ideas with subject experts in the field.

We would like to thank all our instructors, participants, and colleagues whose contributions together made this Workshop a great success.

Co-convened by Prof. Jia Tan and Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei, the workshop brought together scholars for two days of lively, multidisciplinary exchange on how animals, hybrid beings, and mystical creatures move across Chinese culture, languages, histories, and media.

Four recurring themes gave the programme its distinctive shape. Speakers explored the spiritual and religious meanings of creatures as they travel among Buddhist, Daoist, and Christian traditions; tested the boundaries between the human and non-human through discussions of transformation, extinction, ecology, and interspecies relations; examined how queerness, sexuality, and gender can be reimagined through animal and mystical figures; and considered how animation, CGI, and AI-generated media are transforming familiar mythic beings while raising new questions about authorship, technology, and cultural circulation.

Across the panels, mystical creatures emerged not as relics of the past, but as dynamic figures through which to think about belief, identity, ecology, and technological change. Our sincere thanks to all speakers, chairs, participants, and supporters for making the workshop such an inspiring and productive gathering.

We were delighted to host a campus visit for students from ๐‡๐จ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐…๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐‚๐š๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ž!

During the visit, Form 4โ€“6 students explored the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Translation through engaging interactions with our instructors, including Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei, Dr. Yinran Wu, and Dr. Li Li, in the order of their presentations. The sessions encouraged active participation, with students asking thoughtful questions and sharing their perspectives.

Two mini-lectures on Computer-Aided Translation and Interpreting were delivered, offering students valuable insights into human-technology collaboration, as well as how translation and interpreting skills are transferrable to a wide range of career paths.

We hope the visit inspired the students to see how Translation and Interpreting can continue to thrive in the age of AI. We look forward to welcoming them again in the near future!
