[𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠] 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑-𝟐𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒-𝟐𝟓 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

Receiving the General Education Award for Best Expository Writing and the Best Presenter Award is a great honour. In my paper, I explored the development and evolution of Guanyin belief in China during the Tang and Song dynasties. This research encouraged me to venture beyond my primary field of study and deepened my understanding of Buddhism and Guanyin belief, as well as the historical, social, and political contexts of ancient China.

My interest in these subjects continued to grow throughout the research process, inspiring me to visit some of the historical sites discussed in my paper. This experience was both intellectually stimulating and personally enriching, allowing me to connect my academic research with the cultural heritage I had explored. It also enriched my development as a Translation student, as effective translation requires knowledge of diverse subject areas and an understanding of different cultural contexts.

I hope my experience will inspire fellow students to explore subjects beyond their own majors and embrace the learning opportunities offered by General Education. I believe these courses encourage interdisciplinary thinking and foster a deeper appreciation of the world around us.

Inside CUHK Translation Classrooms (2)

What is it like to study translation at CUHK? This reel takes you inside our undergraduate and postgraduate classes. It features four courses:

🎧 TRAN2140 Simultaneous Interpreting (BA)
🎧 TRAN6307 Simultaneous Interpreting (MA)
📖 TRAN3270 Literary Translation Strategies: English–Chinese (BA)
⚖️ TRAN2840 Introduction to Legal Translation (BA)

In interpreting classes, students learn to process information and interpret in real time.

In literary translation classes, students discuss how to recreate the style and nuances of the source text.

Legal translation calls for a different approach. Students learn to handle texts with precision and use legal language appropriately.

Translation is more than replacing words. Interpreting requires quick thinking. Literary translation demands sensitivity to language and style. Legal translation places accuracy and clarity first. Each course develops a different set of skills.

It is wonderful to see everyone back on campus and fully engaged in class. We hope the new term brings new knowledge, fresh perspectives and plenty of opportunities to explore the world of language and translation!

Inside CUHK Translation Classrooms (3)

There is something special about the first weeks of a new semester. The classroom fills with new faces, quiet anticipation, and that familiar mix of curiosity, nervousness, and excitement that comes with the start of a new academic journey.

This welcome reel captures a few of those moments from three courses:
 TRAN3080 Research Methodology in Translation Studies
 TRAN3620 Translation Technologies in the Age of AI, and
 TRAN1010 Principles of Translation

From the group photo to the classrooms, it is always a pleasure to see a new cohort begin to find their place—meeting classmates, settling into the rhythm of university life, and taking their first steps into a new world of translation.

In Research Methodology in Translation Studies classes, students learn how to ask research questions, review literature, and design translation-related research projects.

In Translation Technologies in the Age of AI classes, students explore programming languages and AI agents, and use them to address translation-related issues such as assessment, workflow, and visualization.

In Principles of Translation classes, students are introduced to the basic concepts of translation and learn to think critically about language, meaning, and cross-cultural communication.
Every new class brings its own energy. Some students arrive already certain that translation is where they belong; others are just beginning to discover how rich, wide-ranging, and meaningful this field can be. That is part of what makes the beginning so memorable. A translation classroom is not only a place to learn skills. It is also a place to ask questions, exchange ideas, and start looking at language, culture, and communication in new ways.

We are delighted to welcome you to CUHK Translation. We hope this year will bring inspiring conversations, rewarding challenges, new friendships, and many exciting discoveries along the way.
