Engineering students are encouraged to take part in a variety of external competitions such as the Robocon Hong Kong Contest outside their regular curriculum, where they can apply what they learn, develop skills in various aspects, and widen their global perspectives. One such popular external competition is the Robocon Hong Kong Contest since 2004. To benefit more students from the new learning experience, the Robocon Team, now called the HKUST Robotics Team, has been expanded in 2010. The Robotics Team members will represent the HKUST to participate in major events namely the Robocon Contest, the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) competition and the Smart Car Competition. Besides robotics competition, the Robotics team would like to encourage students to explore in other areas. We have also taken part in various of presentation competitions and entrepreneur competitions in order to encourage students to become excellent leaders.

Our Robocon sub-team participates in the prestigious ABU Robocon, a thrilling international contest featuring top teams from across the Asia-Pacific region. Each year, we tackle a brand-new engineering challenge inspired by the host countries’ and regions culture, like Japan, Fiji, , Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia etc.

With fully autonomous robots taking center stage, this year's game is all about raw speed, razor-sharp strategy, and flawless ex*****on. Right now, we are actively migrating to exciting new systems and developing custom new tools to give us the ultimate edge in the competition.

Get hands-on with:
⚙️ Designing whole system of robot and implementing custom mechanisms with high level manufacturing process.
⚡ Optimizing your robot for maximum speed and performance
🔌 Designing your own PCBs and Embedded Systems
👁️ Depth Camera Computer Vision, Robot Control, 3D LiDAR driven AUTO Navigation, and high-level algorithms

Our mission? To triumph over rival universities and institutions locally and earn the prestigious chance to represent Hong Kong on the international stage against Asia's best.

No prior experience is needed. Bring your curiosity, be ready to tackle intense engineering challenges, and push the limits of robotics!

What if your robot was built to race, fight, see, and think? 🤖

The **Intelligent Racing (IR)** sub-team focuses on developing different kinds of innovative robotic vehicles. From small autonomous cars to full-scale racing platforms and even drones — We provide the chance to explore robotics through a wide variety of projects.

Our projects include:
- Sumo Robots
- Line-Following Cars
- Object Recognition Vehicles
- Go-Karts
- Drones
- And maybe more!

Each project brings challenges and different learning experience — from designing your first robot to building intelligent systems that can sense, decide, and react on their own.

Get hands-on with:
⚙️ CNC milling, 3D printing, and mechanical fabrication
🔌 PCB design, electronics, and soldering
💻 Embedded systems and microcontroller programming
🧠 Computer vision, control systems, and various algorithms
🏎️ Designing, building, testing, and racing real robotic vehicles

Whether you are interested in hardware, software or mechanical design, there is ALWAYS something for you to explore in IR.

NO prior experience is needed — Bring your curiosity, build something from scratch, and see how fast your ideas can go thrive 🏁

Underwater is another playground for robots 🌊

The ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) sub-team competes in the MATE ROV Competition, where the swimming pool becomes a simulated ocean. Here, our ROV takes on underwater missions inspired by real-world challenges—from marine exploration and conservation to offshore engineering and data collection.

Get hands-on with:
🤖 Mechatronics, electronics, and waterproofing
🎮 Piloting and controlling a robot in 3D space
🛠️ Designing custom tools, manipulators and mechanical systems
💻 Embedded systems, sensors, and control software

We also have an exclusive Business Department for members interested in turning our technical work into posters and promotional content. It is where robotics meets design, communication, and outreach—without needing to choose only one.

No prior experience is needed. Bring your curiosity, be ready to learn, and get your hands wet
