EmoCare: An AI companion for emotional well-being 🌈

As generative AI becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life, many young people confide in chatbots and seek advice when feeling down. Yet studies indicate that chatbots may amplify users’ negative emotions and reinforce beliefs that have no basis in reality.

Developed by a team led by Professor Song Yanjie of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, EmoCare is an AI-powered application designed to support users’ emotional well-being and provide a more caring space for self-reflection. Guided by the PERMA framework of positive psychology: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment, EmoCare enables users to write diary entries, generate images and engage in caring conversations with its AI companion.

Professor Song explains that EmoCare uses LLMs and NLP to analyse diary entries and generate matching images and caring conversations. These activities encourage users to reflect on their thoughts and feelings, support emotional regulation, and foster a positive mindset.

Sport is for everyone🏀

Before studying in the United States in her 20s, Professor Amy Ha Sau-ching, Head of the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE), thought only “agile” people played sport. Then she saw her American professors loving softball and basketball despite moving clumsily. Her mind was blown!

Today, many people still think that sport is just for the naturally speedy and strong. At FLASS, we hold that physical activity is for ALL, regardless of their age, background, or ability. We also believe sport builds confidence, teamwork, and sense of community.

Read the full interview with three HPE professors on why everyone can engage in sport, how to enhance the joy of movement, and how to get more people active: https://bit.ly/4xOMm6a

“Me Time” at Tai O🧘🏻‍♀️

As a mother of two and a PhD candidate in the Department of Science and Environmental Studies, Ms Khadeza Yasmin constantly juggles family responsibilities—caring for her children and managing her home—with the academic pressure of advancing her research. This demanding balance has left her little time to unwind, let alone connect with peers, or enjoying leisurely activities. She had little time to rest.

The Tai O tour in March, organised for FLASS Research Postgraduate (RPg) students, arrived at an opportune moment when she desperately needed a break from her routine. During the tour, she learnt how to make traditional salted duck yolks, enjoyed a boat ride to appreciate the stilt houses lining the waterways, and shared funny everyday stories with fellow RPg students.

Strolling quietly through the fishing village, Yasmin gathered her thoughts, reassessed her goals, and refocused on her research and writing. The tour provided the long-awaited emotional recharge she had long craved. “The ‘me time’ reduced my stress and reminded me of the importance of balancing academic pursuit, family life and rest time,” she said.

A life intertwined with TCM🌿

In old districts of Hong Kong such as To Kwa Wan, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) shops still actively serve the community. Within the nostalgic ambience of these shops, local residents buy herbal products and consult traditional Chinese medicine practitioners (CMPs) when they fall ill.

Born into a Chinese medicine family, Professor Stephen Chiu Wing-kai, Chair Professor of Sociology, Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies, has many childhood memories connected to TCM. When he was young, his father would take him to annual dinners organised by the CMP circle. There, his father and a circle of “uncles” played mahjong, exchanged stories, and boasted—often with disarming confidence—about their medical skills.

In his contributing article, Professor Chiu shows how his life has been intertwined with TCM. As a scholar and close observer of the community, he traces the different phases of development the field has undergone, including how the industry used opportunities and overcame challenges as it strives for mainstreaming and professionalisation over the past few decades.

Summer Programmes at FLASS: Hands-on Learning, from Star-Gazing to AI

This summer, secondary school students from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland brought their curiosity to EdUHK. Through a series of Summer Programmes, they experienced university life up close and turned big ideas into hands-on discoveries.

From June to Aug, FLASS departments organised a range of summer activities for local students:
• Sporty students tried different workout equipment in the gym and learned how to measure physical fitness at the Human Performance Laboratory.
• On a July evening, aspiring astronomers searched for Venus in the western sky and used star chart to identify constellations.
• Young environmentalists collected water samples from Tolo Harbour, then examined them under microscopes in the biology lab.
• Mathematics fans used the Polypad online learning platform to transform fractions and geometric figures into music, learning abstract concepts through sound.
• In “Finance Quest”, participants role-played as university students. By completing mentally and physically challenging games, they earned Campus Dollars to cover costs of university life.

From 27 to 31 July, about 130 secondary learners and teachers from 15 secondary schools in the Chinese Mainland joined a five-day Summer Programme tailored by the Global Affairs Office and the Faculties. On 30 July, academic staff from the four FLASS departments led taster lectures and experiential workshops at the Tai Po campus. The students explored environmental science, maths, AI and educational technology, and finance. Many were especially impressed by our emphasis on cultivating independent learning skills.
