FLASS Summer Programmes Highlights✨

This summer, FLASS organised a variety of Summer Programmes for secondary students, where they experienced the joy of learning and the excitement of campus life. The programmes covered a wide range of subjects, including AI and mathematics, STEAM education, environmental science, financial education, and sports science.

This issue of FLASS FORWARD captured several highlights from these programmes. The stories will bring you to the scene:

🌌Awe under the stars: From the rooftop, young stargazers spotted Venus shining in the western sky as the clouds gradually cleared. Following the astronomy introduction class , they left with a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the boundless universe.

🌊Wonders of the undersea: Young environmentalists were thrilled to discover the great variety and number of microorganisms in water samples collecting during the coastal environmental exploration tour, all observed under the microscope.

👛 Learning by playing: Participants of “Finance Quest” had a great time completing team challenges and financial learning activities to earn “Campus Dollars”. As “university students”, they managed their earnings wisely to cover university-life expenses.

🧮Maths made musical: Students were amazed to understand abstract mathematical concepts through Polypad, an online learning platform that turns fractions and geometric figures into music. After the workshop, they were eager to explore new tools for mathematics learning.

FLASS暑期體驗課程精彩回顧✨

今年夏天，博文及社會科學學院為中學生舉辦了一連串暑期體驗課程，讓他們感受學習的樂趣，並體驗豐富多彩的校園生活。課程內容涵蓋人工智能與數學、STEAM教育、科學、環境管理、金融教育及運動科學等多個領域。

本期院刊記錄了課程中的幾個精彩時刻，帶你重溫學生們的學習體驗：

🌌星空的奧妙：當雲層逐漸散去，在天台等候的年輕觀星者終於看到金星在西邊天空出現。完成天文入門課後，他們更深地體會到宇宙的浩瀚和奇妙。

🌊奇妙的海底世界：參加海岸實地考察體驗活動的青年環境守護者，在顯微鏡下觀察活動中採集的水樣本時，驚訝地發現當中蘊藏着種類繁多、數量繁多的微生物。

👛寓學習於遊戲：「金融探索」活動的參與者透過完成一系列考驗團隊合作和金融知識的挑戰，賺取「校園幣」。化身「大學生」的他們，需要妥善所得的「收入」，以應付大學生活的開支。

🧮音樂化數學：學生透過線上學習平台Polypad，將分數和幾何圖形轉化為音樂，從而理解抽象的數學概念。在工作坊結束後，他們更有動力去探索使用新的工具來學習數學。

Teaching From the Heart💙

Teaching is far more than simply delivering knowledge—it’s about inspiring and engaging students, and effectively passing the knowledge on. Three FLASS faculty members have gone above and beyond in their teaching and in supporting their students. Their dedication, care, and commitment to excellence have earned them the Faculty Teaching Award and the Faculty Caring Teacher Award for the 2025/26 academic year.

FLASS Builds Global Connections at EAIE 2026

Dr Bob Sun Fenghua, Assistant Dean (International Engagement) of FLASS, joined the Hong Kong delegation alongside Professor May Cheng May-hung, EdUHK Vice President (Academic), and other EdUHK representatives, at the European Association for International Education (EAIE) 2026 Conference and Exhibition, held in Glasgow, the United Kingdom, from 8 to 11 September.

Bringing together more than 7,300 international education professionals, EAIE2026 provided a valuable platform for exchange and partnership-building. During the event, Dr Sun met representatives from higher education institutions in Poland, the UK, Egypt, and Vietnam to explore potential collaborations, enhance student mobility, and advance internationalisation.

Led by Professor James Tang, Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee (UGC), the Hong Kong delegation comprised representatives of the eight UGC-funded universities. The delegation showcased Hong Kong’s research excellence, academic strengths, and appeal as a global study destination.

FLASS remains committed to supporting EdUHK’s internationalisation efforts through active engagement on the global stage.

博文及社會科學學院助理院長（國際交流）孫風華博士，與教大副校長（學術）鄭美虹教授及其他教大代表，一同隨香港代表團出席於9月8日至11日在英國格拉斯哥舉行的2026年「歐洲教育者（EAIE）年會暨展覽」。

本屆EAIE2026匯聚超過7,300名國際教育專業人士，為各地高等教育機構提供交流及建立夥伴關係的重要平台。活動期間，孫博士與來自波蘭、英國、埃及和越南等地的高等院校代表會面，探討未來合作機會，促進學生交流，以及推動國際化發展。

由大學教育資助委員會 (UGC) 秘書長鄧特抗教授率領的香港代表團，匯聚八所教資會資助大學的代表，向國際教育界展示香港高等教育的卓越研究成果、學術優勢，以及作為國際學生理想留學目的地的吸引力。

Prof. Neri: People come first even in the AI era👤

At a time when it is hotly debated whether AI is replacing people or helping us reach our full potential, Professor Ferrante Neri provides a clear answer: people remain at the heart of the organisation.

In his first message for the faculty newsletter as the new Dean of FLASS, Professor Neri highlights that organisational success does not come from AI power alone. Instead, it depends on people who critically examine AI outputs, contribute their own ideas and creativity, adapt them to organizational realities, and work together to turn plans into practice.

To unleash people’s potential, Professor Neri spends time getting to know his teammates, listening to their perspectives, and understanding their priorities and concerns. He also values recognising their achievements and encouraging their participation. When needed, he is ready to provide support, work through difficulties with them, and guide them towards solutions.
