The Culture Promotion Committee of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, set up in 1999, has presented a great number and variety of arts and cultural programmes every year since then with the aim of broadening both students’ and staff members’ artistic and cultural horizons. This enrichment of campus life and encouragement of cultural awareness allows us to achieve a further aim: that of contributing to the overall well-being and all-round development of PolyU students. Since the establishment of the Culture Promotion Committee, over a hundred programmes have been held on campus each year. These have encompassed music, dance, theatre, visual arts, films and video, literary arts, talk series, carnivals, exhibitions, artist-in-residence programmes, PolyU Arts Festivals and many others.

【Culture of the Sinosphere – Republic of Korea】Historical Exploration and talk

The “Sinosphere ── South Korea” series on Silla and Chinese Culture has successfully concluded! The programme kicked off with an insightful lecture on 23 April and concluded with an enriching 7-day (6-night) historical exploration trip to South Korea.

We were privileged to have the itinerary personally curated by Prof. Joseph S. P. Ting, PolyU University Fellow, member of the PolyU Artists’ Alliance, and former Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History. Before the group set off, Prof. Ting delivered a talk at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre at PolyU, focusing on Korea’s Confucian and Buddhist cultural traditions, as well as its historical architecture and cultural heritage—helping the PolyU community understand that Korea’s role as an important part of the Sinosphere, and its shared cultural lineage with Chinese civilisation.

Led by Prof. Ting, PolyU staff and students then embarked on a journey to Cheongju, Chungju, Danyang, Gyeongju, and Seoul to explore the origins of Silla culture and its relationship with Chinese culture. Together, they visited numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient temples, traditional academies, and historic villages

With Prof. Ting’s expert, in-depth commentary throughout the journey, participants gained a unique, multi-perspective understanding of the historical and cultural links between China and Korea . The trip was a deeply rewarding experience, sparking fresh academic and cultural insights for everyone involved!
