劉釗教授，1977年考入吉林大學歷史系考古專業，1984、1990年先後在吉林大學古籍整理研究所獲得碩士、博士學位。曾任吉林大學古籍整理研究所副所長和廈門大學歷史系主任。現任復旦大學出土文獻與古文字研究中心主任、復旦大學一級教授、教育部長江學者、上海市領軍人才、全國高校「黃大年式教師團隊」負責人、中國歷史研究院冷門學科扶持計劃「中國古典學」學科帶頭人、湖南省博物館「馬王堆研究院」名譽院長，同時兼任中國古文字研究會副會長、中國訓詁學會副會長、中國殷商文化學會副會長、「古文字與中華文明傳承發展工程」專家委員會委員等職。

Professor Liu Zhao was admitted to the Department of History at Jilin University in 1977 to study archaeology and received his M.A. (1984) and Ph.D. (1990) at its Institute for the Collation of Ancient Books, of which he later served as Deputy Director. He was for some time Chair of the History Department at Xiamen University and is currently Director of the Center for Research on Chinese Excavated Classics and Paleography at Fudan University, where he holds the title of First-Grade Professor. Professor Liu is a Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and a Shanghai Leading Talent. He heads the national “Huang Danian-style Faculty Teams” and leads the “Chinese Classics” discipline under the Chinese Academy of History’s Support Program for Endangered Disciplines. He is also Honorary Dean of the Mawangdui Research Institute at the Hunan Museum, Vice President of the Chinese Paleography Research Association, the Chinese Exegetical Studies Association, and the Chinese Yin-Shang Culture Association, as well as a member of the Expert Committee of the Paleography and Chinese Civilization Inheritance and Development Program.

Envisioning Islands - Public Lecture Series on Maritime History and Literature - Islands in the Song Period by Prof. Johannes Kurz

📌Topic：“Islands in the Song Period”

This talk will highlight some of the terms helpful to our understanding of islands in the Song dynasty by perusing relevant maps, and officially as well as privately compiled historical works. These may be a first step towards a more in-depth study of what scholars in the Song may have envisioned in regard to distant and not-so distant places surrounded or close by the ocean. Much of this in many cases – a few of which I will touch upon – was still inspired by knowledge written down in previous dynasties. Among the topics covered will be “islands” as markers of foreign countries in maps; physical islands as hiding places, of exile and punishment, and as locations cut off from “culture”; imagined and real islands in modern research.

📌Speaker：Prof. Johannes L. Kurz

Johannes Kurz received his Ph.D. in Classical Chinese Studies from the University of Heidelberg in 1993. He worked as an assistant professor at the University of Kiel and at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.His research interests are the historiography in the early Song period, the imperial libraries in Song, the history of the Five Dynasties and Ten States and the Southern Tang, and the Chinese sources in the fabrication of modern Southeast Asian national histories. He has published widely on these subjects and the pre-modern Chinese texts on Borneo, Singapore, and Burma. Presently, he continues work on the identification of Dashi 大食 in the Song dynasty.

His latest publications include: “Were There Really Cham Muslims in Hainan and Guangzhou in the Late Tenth Century: A Re-Examination of Relevant Chinese Sources”; “Piaoyue, Piao, Pyu (?): Chinese Textual Evidence Concerning a Southeast Asian Region in Burma from the Tang to the Song Dynasties”: 89-115; and “Philology Lost: Variable Interpretations of the Raid of Guangzhou in 758 from the 18th to 21st Centuries.”

Prof. Ping Wang - "Untranslating the Poet-Transcendent: Li Bo (701–762) Between Cosmology and Equivalence"

Large language models now translate between languages in seconds, reviving an old anxiety: is translation a solved problem? This talk argues that for understanding a culture, fluency was never the difficulty. Taking the great Tang poet Li Bo as its case, it follows a singularly iconic word, xian 仙, the term behind his epithet “poet-transcendent,” as it passes into English. In medieval China, a xian was not merely a being who does not die; a xian held rank and office in a celestial bureaucracy, and could be demoted from it. To render Li Bo a “banished immortal” keeps the exile but quietly drops that cosmic officialdom, leaving behind a familiar romantic genius. For a century “immortal” was the dominant English choice, canonized in dictionaries and anthologies until it seemed self-evident. Machine translation, trained on that same archive, reproduces the reduction as its frictionless default, laying bare how thoroughly it saturated the record. The question, then, is not whether cultures can be translated, but how a concept, precisely by resisting translation, becomes a shared medium for thinking transcendence.

📌Speaker:
Ping Wang is Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington, where she teaches classical Chinese literature and researches the history of Chinese poetry. She has previously held faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin and Princeton University, prior to joining the University of Washington.

Professor Wang’s scholarship bridges Western sinology, translation studies, traditional Chinese classical learning, and contemporary critical theory. She has published numerous articles and is the author of The Age of Courtly Writing: Wen xuan Compiler Xiao Tong (501-531) and His Circle and The Poetic Way of Xie Lingyun, the latter of which examines the significance of landscape poetry (shanshui shi) in Chinese literary history.

Her honors include a research membership at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, a special Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for international collaborative research, and a research fellowship from the Simpson Center for the Humanities at the University of Washington. In 2017, she was invited to lecture at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, and she is currently a resident fellow of the Institute of Chinese Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

「嶺南文化與世界」公開講座系列2026──藝文嶺南：工藝、詩畫與人文景觀，由香港中文大學中國文化研究所嶺南文化研究計劃與香港公共圖書館聯合主辦，兩場知識與美學兼具的專題講座將於10月25日（日）及11月28日（六）在香港中央圖書館演講廳舉行。

兩場專題講座聚焦嶺南在跨域交流中的文化生產與藝術創造，從清代廣州工藝實踐與嶺南羅浮人文地景兩個主題切入。一方面，探討廣東銅胎琺瑯器如何在中外貿易背景下融合西洋裝飾元素，體現廣州工匠對外來技術與審美的創新轉化；另一方面，考察蘇軾嶺南詩文對地方知識、人文景觀與文化記憶的建構作用，以及清代與之相關的《羅浮香影圖》。透過工藝、詩畫與人文景觀的視角進行觀察，本系列將展現嶺南文化在跨域和歷史互動中的創新活力。

Art and Literature of Lingnan: Craftsmanship, Poetic Painting, and Humanistic Landscape, Public Lecture Series on “Lingnan Culture and the World” 2026

Jointly organised by Hong Kong Public Libraries and Institute of Chinese Studies, CUHK

The Public Lecture Series on “Lingnan Culture and the World” 2026, themed “Art and Literature of Lingnan: Craftsmanship, Poetic Painting, and Humanistic Landscape” and jointly organised by the Institute of Chinese Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Public Libraries, features two insightful talks exploring the aesthetic side of Lingnan. Two lectures will be held at the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Central Library on 25 October (Sunday) and 28 November (Saturday).

The two lectures, one focused on the craftsmanship of the region during the Qing era, and the other on the humanistic landscape of Luofu, reveal how cross-regional interactions drove cultural and artistic production in Lingnan. The first lecture looks at how China’s trade with the West introduced Western decorative elements into Canton enamelled copperware, showcasing Guangzhou craftsmen’s innovative reinterpretation of Western techniques and aesthetics. The second lecture shifts focus to Su Shi’s Lingnan-themed verses, examining the construction of Lingnan’s humanistic landscape and cultural memory, as well as the creation of the Paintings of Fragrant Dream of Luofu during the Qing dynasty. Approaching the core theme through the lens of craftsmanship, poetic painting, and humanistic landscape, this series reflects the innovative dynamics of Lingnan culture in cross-regional and historical interactions.

This public lecture series is part of RGC Collaborative Research Project “Lingnan Culture and the World” (2023–2026) and is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series.

Institute of Chinese Studies Public Lecture - Dr. Jennifer Dorothy Lee - "Shuttered Eyes, Kinship Threads: Tracing Music and Migration in the Family of Yo-Yo Ma"

What can a single photograph say? The black-and-white artefact featured in this talk, a product of the Nanjing Guanghua Photo Studio, shows a family like many others in 1946, caught between wars and continents. The figures pictured are musicians, primarily, but also teachers, scientists, and jacks-of-all-trades. They are the progenitors of the famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, of his sister Yeou-Cheng, and of me. Drawing on lenses that range from music to art history to something akin to critical fabulation, I unfold the episodic, recursive process of unearthing my family history for the very first time. The process starts from initial encounters with a single photograph that cue a forensic exploration, compelling me to extract from handwritten letters, intimate anecdotes, musical manuscripts, and persistent memories. At certain points, through an historian's microscope, I reconstruct the spaces in which these familial figures lived and breathed. At other points, I activate imaginative techniques, such as the musical notations they leave behind, to piece together the facts and fabulations of the past.

📌Speaker:
Dr. Jennifer Dorothy Lee is Associate Professor of Art History, Theory, & Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Trained in comparative literature, Lee brings literary frames and methodologies to work with visual and material objects. Lee's first book, Anxiety Aesthetics: Maoist Legacies in China, 1978–1985 (University of California Press, 2024) offers a sustained study of aesthetics, art, and subjectivity redefined in the historical moment bridging the Mao era with Dengist reforms. Lee's current book project, Diasporic Longing, explores belonging, displacement, and music from Asia to Europe among her family of musicians. Tracking her progenitors' wartime migrations amid 20th-century upheavals, Lee weaves biography, storytelling, fragments of poetry, and musical notation to revisit the meanings of diaspora across three continents. Lee holds a PhD in East Asian Studies from New York University, an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of London, and a BA in English & Comparative Literature from Columbia University.

國學大師饒宗頤教授（1917–2018）學養淵深，融通中西，兼具藝術修養與人文精神，開創諸多嶄新的研究方向。為紀念饒教授誕辰一百一十週年，香港中文大學中國文化研究所聯合香港大學饒宗頤學術館、香港浸會大學饒宗頤國學院、香港大學馮平山圖書館和學海書樓，共同舉辦「饒宗頤教授紀念講座系列」。

三場「頤學映真」專題講座由中國文化研究所主辦，特邀熟悉饒教授生平與學術成就的專家學者，從宗教史、考古學、書畫藝術等不同領域與視角，回顧、探討其學術貢獻與創見。這不僅是對一代鴻儒的緬懷與致敬，更是推動饒學成果整合、交流、再思與傳承的重要契機，冀能啟迪新一代學人拓展學術視野、開創文化新境。

Lecture Series in Honour of Professor Jao Tsung-i: Reflection and Truth in Jao’s Scholarship

Professor Jao Tsung-i (1917–2018), renowned for his profound erudition in both the artistic and humanistic spheres East and West, had pioneered numerous research innovations. To commemorate the 110th anniversary of his birth, the “Lecture Series in Honour of Professor Jao Tsung-i” is co-organized by the Institute of Chinese Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at Hong Kong Baptist University, Fung Ping Shan Library at HKU, and Hok Hoi Library.

The three upcoming lectures, themed “Reflection and Truth in Jao’s Scholarship” and hosted by the Institute of Chinese Studies, bring together leading scholars with expertise in Professor Jao’s life and academic achievements. Approaching Professor Jao’s pioneering work from the perspectives of religious history, archaeology, and art of painting and calligraphy, this lecture series revisits his academic contributions and his intellectual insights, serving not just as a tribute to a preeminent scholar, but also as a prime opportunity to discuss, reflect, and build on Professor Jao’s remarkable scholarly legacy. This endeavour hopes to inspire a new generation of researchers to broaden their academic horizon and continue to chart new ground in the studies of Chinese culture.
