Led by Prof. Wang Jianping, Dean of the College of Computing, the project titled “SynapseCity: AI-driven Urban Emergency Response and Rescue” has secured HK$55.69 million under the latest Research Grants Council Theme-based Research Scheme.

The flagship AI project aims to develop the world’s first privacy-preserving, cross-departmental emergency coordination platform to enhance urban public safety and emergency management. Leveraging multi-agent systems, SynapseCity will enable real-time analysis, knowledge sharing, and decision support during extreme weather events and other emergencies.

This achievement highlights the College’s research excellence and commitment to advancing AI for safer, smarter, and more resilient cities.

【 : CityUHK leads “Future Computing · Future Computing Power” forum and launches Quantum Intelligence Industry Alliance 🗣️】

Hosted by the College of Computing at , the “Future Computing · Future Computing Power” thematic forum was successfully held at the Shanghai World Expo Center. 👏🏻

As one of the flagship thematic forums of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), the event brought together leading scholars, academicians, and industry leaders from the UN, China, the US, Europe, and Japan to explore cutting-edge technologies, including data centres and quantum computing. 🚀

In his opening remarks, Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, CityUHK Council Chairman, noted that advanced computing power and computing are becoming the infrastructure of our era. Professor Lin Jing from the College of Computing also highlighted: “We must recognise that true intelligence means doing the most with the fewest resources.” 🧠

Additionally, during the WAIC, a CityUHK delegation met with H.E. Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, Cabinet Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and Digital Economy, and H.E. Mr W***y Bett, Ambassador of Kenya to China. The two sides exchanged views on digital education and AI capacity building, exploring how CityUHK’s research strengths can combine with local resources to build an education model suited to Kenya’s needs. 🤝🏻

scholars Prof. Hou Junhui (Department of Computer Science) and Prof. Zhao Xiangyu (Department of Data Science) from the College of Computing have been awarded funding from the Research Grants Council under the 2026/27 Research Fellow Scheme. Huge congratulations on this prestigious recognition of their distinguished achievements! 🥳
🥽Prof. Hou’s funded research project, “Neural Spatial Computing: Geometric Modeling, Representation Learning, and Applications”, aims to create immersive and intuitive experiences by seamlessly blending virtual elements with the physical world. It will also support Hong Kong’s strategic initiatives in AI-enhanced education, digital entertainment, telemedicine and smart city development.

CityUHK recently received a donation pledge of HK$20 million from Global School of Technology & Management (GSTM), a leading academic institution in Singapore, to support academic teaching, research and the cultivation of innovative technology talent at CityUHK’s College of Computing, injecting new momentum into regional technological development.

The cheque presentation ceremony was held on 23 June, co-officiated by Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Acting President of CityUHK, and Mr Liang Bin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GSTM. CityUHK has received the first instalment of HK$5 million. Representatives from both institutions gathered to witness this important milestone.

The generous donation from GSTM will focus on the long-term academic and research strategic layout of CityUHK's College of Computing. By optimising research hardware and talent cultivation programmes, it aims to create a world-class innovation and technology education ecosystem. A total of HK$15 million of the donation will be used to fund CityUHK's establishment of a new research platform to promote teaching and research in frontier fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, data science and the application of innovative technologies.

The remaining HK$5 million will be used to establish a dedicated scholarship, "Singapore and Malaysia Computer, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Talent Nurturing Scholarship", which aims to attract outstanding students from Singapore and Malaysia to pursue related programmes at CityUHK's College of Computing, nurturing more technological talent for Southeast Asia and contributing to regional technological advancement.

This donation not only symbolises the beginning of a deeper collaboration between the two sides, but will also inject new momentum into innovation and technology education in Asia, demonstrating their firm commitment to promoting international collaboration and advancing global technology education.
