[ Conserving Marine Biodiversity: Deep Sea Adventure🌊]

On 6 & 13 Aug 2026, the Department of Biology organised “Conserving Marine Biodiversity: Deep Sea Adventure” 🌊, engaging 50+ local and non-local primary and secondary students and their families. Highlights included a seminar by Dr Veronica CHAN, guided lab tours, hands-on deep-sea specimens from the South China Sea collected by Prof Jianwen QIU’s team, and immersive VR/AR “dives.” Thanks to our scientific officers and student volunteers🙌. We look forward to welcoming more young biologists and their families next summer, as we continue to inspire a passion for science and stewardship of our blue planet!

Congratulations to Professor Liao Pan on winning a Gold Medal at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival 2026.

His project, “A Method to Produce an Unusual Monoterpenoid,” offers a greener, cost-effective way to produce lavandulol—a key ingredient in perfumes and fragrances—by rebuilding the plant’s natural biosynthetic pathway in a host plant. This enables efficient, scalable production for industry while reducing environmental impact.

We are proud of Prof. Liao’s achievement and his team’s contribution to translating biology into real-world applications.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐎 𝐏𝐚𝐧 from the Department of Biology led a team of researchers to systematically summarise major types of genomic variation and focus on how these variants affect the biosynthesis, transport, and accumulation of flavour-related metabolites, thereby driving diversification in key flavour traits, including sweetness, acidity, bitterness, pungency, astringency, and aroma. It also discussed the potential of emerging technologies for flavour improvement and provides a new theoretical framework for the targeted breeding of high-quality plants.

🌊 Protecting Marine Biodiversity: A Deep-Sea Adventure 🌊

Do you want to become a brave deep-sea explorer? The deep sea is the most mysterious place on Earth: it’s pitch dark, freezing cold, and under extremely high pressure—but it’s also home to many amazing creatures! There are glowing fish, giant shrimp that look like monsters, and even some bizarre life forms we've never seen before!

In this workshop, organized by the Department of Biology at Hong Kong Baptist University and led by Dr. Veronica Chan, you’ll use VR goggles to "dive" into the deep sea and see with your own eyes how these incredible creatures survive in such extreme conditions. You’ll also get to observe real deep-sea specimens, collected directly from the South China Sea by Prof. Qiu Jianwen, Associate Head of the Department, and see their special adaptations up close!

At the end of the workshop, you’ll receive an exclusive certificate and become a junior guardian of the ocean! Join us now to explore the secrets of the deep sea and help protect marine biodiversity!
