CUHK Science’s annual 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬! This time, we will be adopting an Ask-me-anything setting featuring Dr. YU Xiuzhen, who is a team leader at a national research institute in Japan. Dr. Yu’s career path has been quite a winding road, starting with moving to Japan as an accompanying spouse after obtaining her master’s degree. A decade after relocating, she joined a major research project as a technician, then worked as an engineer.

She didn‘t let a traditional timeline define her, completing her PhD in her late 30s. Just two years after obtaining her PhD, she published a groundbreaking study in the top global journal 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦!

Her journey proves that success isn’t about a straight line; it’s about refusing to give up and finding your own path. Come listen to her inspiring story of breaking barriers and chasing dreams!

今年，我們首度與物理系聯手，以全新的 Ask-Me-Anything（AMA）互動形式，邀請到日本國家級研究所的課題組長 于秀珍博士擔任嘉賓！

于博士的科研之路絕非傳統的「直線」常規。碩士畢業後，她先以隨行配偶身份移居日本；十年後，她以技術員身份參與大型研究項目，其後轉任工程師。她不曾受限於年齡或傳統時間表，在接近40歲才取得博士學位。然而，在取得博士學位短短兩年內，她便於國際頂尖科學期刊《自然》（𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦）發表了突破性的研究成果！

她的經歷深刻證明了：成功的演算法從不止一種。最重要的是永不言棄、勇敢追夢，並走出一條屬於自己的路。歡迎大家前來與于博士對話，聽她分享如何突破常規，闖出她在科研的一片天。

It was once again a fantastic, healthy, and fun-filled gathering for our Science Faculty family. A massive thank you and a huge shoutout to all the players, cheerleaders, and organizers for a spectacularly well-played tournament and for bringing such vibrant sportsmanship!

Empowering the next generation of scientific talent!

We are delighted to look back on the successful conclusion of the 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 - 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, which ran from 23 September to 21 October 2026.

The month-long event was packed with valuable opportunities, featuring a bustling company exhibition, insightful recruitment talks, inspiring career sharing sessions, a practical soft skills workshop, and an eye-opening company visit. We were thrilled to welcome over 300 science students who eagerly took proactive steps toward their future career paths!

This event would not have been possible without the staunch support of our participating companies and partner organisations. Thank you for investing your time and expertise in our students.

We were absolutely thrilled by the overwhelming turnout. From admission talks and lab tours to hands-on demonstrations, it was heartwarming to see so many of our sessions packed to a full house! 大家好！我是 Allon，是中大地球與環境科學系四年級的學生~

地球科學範疇廣泛，其理論涵蓋整個地球系統的運作，在中大地球與環境科學系主要分為大氣科學、地質學與地球物理，以及環境科學與技術三大學習範疇。今年，承蒙學系支持，主修大氣科學的我得以走出校園，前往香港天文台航空氣象服務科，展開為期一年的實習工作，將理論付諸實踐。

從校園走進辦公室成爲一名實習生，我的主要工作是參與部門的中長期研究項目。當中包括運用推斷統計學方法，驗證飛機積冰預報產品的準確性；同時利用氣象雷達拼圖數據，開發具備長短期記憶（LSTM）的深度學習模型，透過估算雷達回波的強度與分布，預測華南地區的雷暴發展。這些項目涉及大氣動力學、數理邏輯及電腦編程等專業技能，均與我在校修讀的核心課程息息相關。在導師的指導與自主學習下，我得以將這些背景知識轉化為實際應用。

大學的學習旅程並不僅局限於校園之中，我很感恩今年能夠獲得如此寶貴的實習經驗，成為我大學生活的重要延伸，更讓我體會到研究工作的求驗精神。透過不斷嘗試與修正，我將校內學到複雜的理論與抽象的公式應用於實際業務中，真正做到學以致用。更重要的是，這次經驗讓我深入了解公共氣象服務的運作，以及該領域專業人員的日常工作，也構成了我的職場初體驗。一年的實習收穫不僅是知識，還有寶貴的社會經驗，以及個人成長的智慧。

Hello everyone! I am Allon, currently a Year 4 student majoring in Earth and Environmental Sciences at CUHK.

Earth Science is an extensive field that explains how our planet's systems work, primarily divided into three streams for study at CUHK Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences: Atmospheric Science, Geology & Geophysics, and Environmental Science & Technology. Specialising in atmospheric science, I am incredibly grateful for my department's support this year. It has allowed me to step outside the classroom and undertake a one-year placement at the Aviation Weather Services Branch of the Hong Kong Observatory.

As an intern, my role is to conduct research studies for projects that satisfy the medium- to long-term operational needs of the Observatory. My primary tasks involve using statistical methods to evaluate aviation icing forecast products, and developing a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep learning model using historical radar data. This model aims to predict thunderstorm development over the South China region by estimating future radar echo intensity and distribution.

Handling diverse meteorological data requires a solid foundation in weather systems, coding, and statistical analysis—all of which form the core of my major coursework. Guided by my mentors and through self-learning, I have successfully translated these classroom concepts and technical skills into real-world applications.

I am glad that my CUHK journey has extended beyond the campus. Through continuous trial and error, I have learned to bridge the gap between complex theory and hands-on practice. Ultimately, this placement has been an invaluable extension of my studies. It has not only deepened my understanding of public meteorological services, but has also rewarded me with meaningful professional relationships, vital work experience, and personal growth.
