Breaking the Surface Field training program that combines marine robotics, robotics application areas and hands-on working experience in the sea, for various ocean sciences.

The BtS serves as a meeting place of experts and students of marine control engineering and signal processing and the marine robotics application areas in various types of ocean science. We are the world’s first successful, multi-year field training program that combines academic topics in marine robotics and robotics application areas and hands-

on working experience in the sea, doing remote sensing and sampling for various ocean sciences. We are also unique in that we put strong emphasis on the participation of principal investigators and established research group leaders from across the globe, catering not only to the EU or USA research communities. The program is organized along four program tracks of the event:
- Marine robotics (MAROB);
- marine biology and marine nature protection (MARBIO);
- maritime security, naval and coast guard operations (MARSEC);
- maritime, nautical and ship archaeology (MARCH). The programme consists of plenary talks, tutorials, and fieldwork for all participants. 🌊 What does a melting glacier sound like?

Polar fjords are on the front lines of climate change, but tracking exactly how fast they're losing ice is an massive challenge. Harsh weather, pitch-black polar nights, and hazardous, unstable ice walls make standard monitoring incredibly difficult.

🌊 How do we prepare the next generation of engineers for the real-world challenges of marine environments?
At this year's Breaking the Surface, join Thomas Glotzbach, Cathrin Schröder, and Klaus Pechan from Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), Germany, as they share their innovative approach to engineering education!

In their lecture, "Usage of Marine Robotics in Undergraduate Education at Universities of Applied Sciences," they will discuss how they introduce hands-on marine robotics tasks to students right from their first year—building crucial problem-solving skills, troubleshooting agility, and frustration tolerance early on. 🛠️🛥️
