Bonne Anè! (Happy New Years!) and Happy Haitian Independence Day🇭🇹 from Haitian Students Association here at Columbia. Today once again marks the day Haiti declared its independence from the French, making it the first black republic to do so! In honor of our ancestors, Haitians will eat soup joumou (pumpkin soup) with contents that were forbidden for them to eat during slavery, including carrots, cabbage, and meat. Have a blessed new year!

As Haitians, we cannot pretend to turn a blind eye to the protests. Rebellion in the face of oppression is what Haiti was built on. We did not and will never stand for injustices.
