MSc in Survey Statistics and Data Analytics, ELTE

MSc in Survey Statistics and Data Analytics, ELTE Survey Statistics and Data Analytics is one of the most popular master programmes at ELTE Budapest. biostatistics, policy analysis).

The purpose of our Master's program is to train statisticians and data analysts working in the business, industry, public administration and scientific fields of social research, who are able to contribute to making decisions based on data. The aim of the MSc program in Survey Statistics and Data Analytics is to train statisticians and data analysts in business/industry, public administration and

academia in social research, who are able to contribute to data-driven decision making, managing the whole process of data collection, analysis and interpretation. The program is hosted by the ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences, in cooperation with the ELTE Faculty of Sciences. Potential career path: primarily business/industrial, social research and policy/public administration areas. The greatest emphasis (also in proportion to the number of lecture hours) is on business/industrial applications, and the spectrum is wider than social research (e.g. In the programme we work with survey data, digital data (found data) and administrative data as well. Students can tailor their learning path to their own interests as the electives are organized into the following modules of two to three courses: Biomedical Research, Economic Research, Digital Data Analytics, Social Research, Business Research. The schedule fits other activities of the students: compulsory courses are held on 2 days weekly. YOU SHOULD CHOOSE US IF you are looking for a complex educational program that is interdisciplinary, can be visited with a broad BA/BSc background, and can be flexibly adapted, while providing a strong foundation for statistical/data analytical knowledge. If you would like to have a foundation that gives you the opportunity to develop methods and critical thinking, but also to learn new tools (methods or software) in the future, ensuring lifelong learning. If you want to have the opportunity to develop a learning path and career opportunity that matches your own interests, e.g. applications of data analytics based on artificial intelligence or the most widely used quantitative and qualitative tools of market research in telecommunications or media research. A publication based on Alexandra Fodor's Survey statistics and data analytics MSc thesis.
The paper in Ampersand (Q1) examines whether LLMs are capable of annotating categories that are neither mutually exclusive nor trivial from a hermeneutic perspective.
The findings highlight both the potential and the interpretive limits of LLMs in social science applications, underscoring the importance of careful annotation design and the thoughtful integration of LLMs into human-centered workflows.

We warmly welcome Noa Delaporte, our Erasmus intern, to our department! You’ll likely see him around the department hallways from now on. Below is Noa’s introduction.
"I am currently a first-year Master’s student in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, specializing in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Rennes 2 in France. As part of my studies, I have the opportunity to complete a research internship abroad at Eötvös Loránd University.
This internship allows me not only to apply my skills to meaningful research projects, but also to improve my knowledge and discover new fields that I might not have explored on my own.
Dávid Simon and Ágnes Hárs invited me to join their research project on return migration. My main task is to develop an AI-based tool using Large Language Models (LLMs) to automatically analyze textual data from migration-related interviews and documents.
A second part of my internship will focus on modeling migration duration using survival analysis methods in order to better understand the factors influencing return migration.
These projects are carried out under the supervision of Dávid Simon and contribute to ongoing interdisciplinary research combining data science, artificial intelligence, and migration studies."

We are pleased to announce that, with the support of ELTE DOKK (Center of Excellence for Digital Education Development), a one-year project is launching in our faculty, with the participation of our department and led by department instructor Dávid Simon. Other participants from the department include Annamária Tátrai and Renáta Németh; from the institute, Márton Gosztonyi; from the faculty, Miklós Szabó; and the team is rounded out by two wonderful colleagues from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), Linda Mohay and Ferenc Mújdricza. The project title is: Student Attitudes and Competencies Regarding Artificial Intelligence – Development of a Measurement Tool. The project is linked to the “Artificial Intelligence Flagship Program” announced in the rector’s program. The aim of the research is to create a complex, empirically validated measurement tool that reliably assesses university students’ competencies, attitudes, and behavioral patterns related to the use of artificial intelligence. The project is based on the premise that the rapid proliferation of AI tools is fundamentally transforming the higher education learning environment, while individual students’ AI competencies are highly heterogeneous, and no standardized measurement tool is currently available that can reliably assess these. The research therefore aims to develop a multidimensional, methodologically sound, and validated questionnaire suitable for mapping students’ levels of AI use, motivations, risk aspects, and general attitudes toward technology.
