𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝘁 | 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 & 𝗨𝗻𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝘁
This lecture explores artistic production in East-Central Europe during the second half of the twentieth century, a period often framed through the 𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 “𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹” 𝗮𝗻𝗱 “𝘂𝗻𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹” 𝗮𝗿𝘁. While state-supported practices operated under varying degrees of political control, unofficial artists worked within underground networks and dissenting intellectual circles, asserting creative freedom under restrictive conditions.
𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝗰𝗸, scholar and curator specializing in the art and cultural history of East-Central Europe, will guide us into a region-wide overview of these 𝘂𝗻𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀, tracing how political interference shifted across national contexts. The talk highlights transnational connections between East-Central European artists and broader global currents, particularly through the 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 divide and extended practices such as 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀. Special attention is given to women artists, interrogating the presence or absence of feminist artistic practices under state socialism.
Artists discussed include 𝗧𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘂𝘀𝘇 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗭𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮, 𝗜𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂, 𝗧𝗮𝗺𝗮́𝘀 𝗦𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗷𝗼́𝗯𝘆, members of 𝗜𝗥𝗪𝗜𝗡, alongside key women artists such as 𝗘𝘄𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗺, 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗟𝗟, 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗷𝗮 𝗜𝘃𝗲𝗸𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗰.
