【Campus Unfiltered】✦ 10th Gathering Recap: Personal Relationship II ✦
In our final session of the semester, we gathered over good food to wrap up our journey. What began as a conversation on personal relationships naturally evolved into a deeper look at how the social and political climates of our home countries continue to shape our lives, perspectives, and ties to one another.
📍 We wrapped up the semester by welcoming a new Taiwanese student who joined us to overcome language barriers and learn more about social movements. We also had a fascinating exchange about cultural beliefs, contrasting local traditions and spiritual sensitivities in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. It reminded us that our diverse backgrounds are our greatest asset for broadening our worldviews.
📍 Students from Thailand and the Philippines shed light on the heavy realities of structural corruption and institutional accountability back home. From leadership disputes and public infrastructure concerns to widening economic gaps and transparency issues, we discussed how these systemic challenges affect society's well-being and fuel a generational desire to look for better paths forward.
📍 We explored the emotional toll of navigating tense political landscapes, where young generations often feel an overwhelming sense of exhaustion or powerlessness. Whether it's facing public restrictions or biased media propaganda, many students choose to distance themselves or "go with the flow" to protect their peace. Carrying this underlying tension means that even while studying abroad, we are constantly navigating how and where to speak our minds safely.
📍 While these systemic anxieties can feel deeply isolating, breaking the silence in a safe space completely transformed the room. Realizing that classmates from entirely different countries carry the exact same fears, cautions, and hopes for a fairer world instantly melted the distance between us. By opening up, we turned political concern from a taboo subject into a powerful catalyst for a profound sense of community, mutual validation, and collective resilience on campus.
True community isn't just built on shared fun—it's forged when we realize we aren't alone in the heavy realities we carry.
